A rural Litchfield man arrested after an armed standoff with authorities faces additional charges for assault and illegal possession of weapons.
Thomas Warren Pitts, 27, of Litchfield, barricaded himself in a residence on 640th Avenue Tuesday, after Meeker County Sheriff’s deputies arrived to arrest him. Pitts had an outstanding felony warrant for failing to register as a sex offender in Minnesota.
Four Ridgewater College students will be reading to Willmar Junior High students on March 3 in celebration of “Read Across America.”
This is an event recognized across the country in honor of the late Dr. Seuss’ birthday. For the past few years, Willmar Junior High has celebrated by having all students hear the same book read to them by their teachers in anticipation of this special event. On the actual “Read Across America” day, an exciting part of the book is read to them by community members.
Eagle Spot Weekends will be offered at Colvill Park in Red Wing each Saturday and Sunday through March 16, when experienced volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about the many eagles that spend their winter or stop during migration at Colvill Park. The Minnesota Deer & Turkey Expo is March 7-9 at the Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna.
Features this year include a locked antlers display, a trail cam photo contest, more than 20 seminars on deer, turkey, bear, and food plot topics, a deer/bear/moose trophy contest, hands-on optics tryout area, new products special display area, wild game cooking and venison butchering demonstrations and archery, airgun, and laser firearms shooting ranges.
Byron Ferguson, archery trick shot, will perform March 8-9.
Dark houses, fish houses and shelters must be off the ice of inland waters no later than midnight Friday, Feb. 29.
If houses or shelters are not removed by the deadline, owners will be prosecuted and the structure may be confiscated and removed or destroyed by a conservation officer. Contents of the structure may be seized and held for 60 days; if not claimed by the owner within that time, the items become property of the state of Minnesota.
The Hutchinson School District 423 facilities committee has reached a consensus on which building plans it will recommend to the board.
A process of eliminating options the committee believed were not feasible began last week and finished Monday night.
Artwork created by veterans will be on public display from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Marc 6, at the St. Cloud VA Medical Medical Center’s Auditorium (Building 8), 4801 Veterans Drive.
More than 60 pieces of art will be exhibited from among 52 different categories including fine art (painting, drawing, sculpture and photography), applied art (ceramics, woodcarving, needlework and leatherwork), and craft kits (string art, poster art and fabric art).

Beginning as early as late November, white-tailed deer bucks shed their antlers. When the rut finishes and daylight levels drop, testosterone production in bucks falls and antlers are ready to be cast.
New Century Charter School students are presenting the musical “HONK!”
Showtimes are 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 6-8 and 4 p.m. Sunday, March 9. All shows are at New Century, 45 W. Highland Park Drive.
“HONK!” is produced and directed by Terry Kempfert and Sheila Hendricks and stars 40 local students in grades 7-12.
The musical is based on Hans Christian Anderson’s classic story “The Ugly Duckling.” It is full of humor and puns as the overgrown duckling meets up with quirky and dangerous characters while he goes looking for his identity.
