“Traditionally, we celebrate generations of independence by allowing our children to play with wires coated with explosives that burn at 2,000 degrees,” says State Fire Marshal Jerry Rosendahl, “but there are no other circumstances under which we’d let our children anywhere near these things. Fireworks are not toys. They require strict attention to be used safely.”
With four regulars gone for the weekend, new stars emerged as Hutchinson won two of three games over Class A teams for third place in the Victoria Tournament.

H. Lenard Christensen, 91, of Hutchinson, died Monday, June 30, at Burns Manor Nursing Home in Hutchinson.
A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 3, at Vineyard United Methodist Church in Hutchinson. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery in Hutchinson.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, and from 8 to 9 a.m. Thursday at the Dobratz-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Hutchinson. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the services Thursday at the church.

A 22-year-old Maple Grove woman was killed in a three-vehicle crash Sunday (June 30) near Cedar Mills.
The State Patrol has not released the name of the woman, pending notification of family. According to the State Patrol, she was eastbound on State Highway 7 in a 2006 Saturn Ion at about 3:50 p.m.

Policy provisions
Provisions taking effect in the omnibus agriculture and veterans affairs policy law, sponsored by Rep. Al Juhnke (DFL-Willmar) and Sen. Jim Vickerman (DFL-Tracy), include:
Prices received by Minnesota farmers for soybeans for June averaged $12.40 per bushel, an increase of 50 cents from the May price according to the Minnesota Field Office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Corn was up 96 cents to a June price of $5.80 per bushel.
The all hog price for June was $56.20 per cwt., a decrease of $1.40 from the May price. The all beef cattle price for June was $84.40 per cwt., a decrease of $0.40 from the May price.
The all milk price for June, at $21.00 per cwt., was up $1.30 from May.

Minnesota hog producers had an inventory of 7.60 million hogs and pigs on June 1, 2008, up 9 percent from last year and up 1 percent from the March 1, 2008 figure of 7.50 million, according to the Minnesota Field Office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This is a record high inventory for June 1. Breeding hogs totaled 580 thousand head, down 5 percent from a year earlier. Market hogs and pigs at 7.02 million head, were up 10 percent from a year ago.
