Oather “Marty” Martin has followed a long and winding road toward his District 3 McLeod County Board candidacy.
“I feel that there’s not too many facets that I haven’t encountered,” Martin said. Compared to the other candidates in the race for retiring commissioner Grant Knutson’s seat, Martin thinks he has more diverse experiences to draw on.

This year the Minnesota Legislature passed $15.32 million in bonding bills that will go for state trails. None of this money will go for the upgrading of the Luce Line State Trail that runs from Cosmos to Plymouth through Hutchinson. The reason is that State Rep. Ron Shimanskl will not support upgrading the trail. The following is a list of places the $15.32 million went to:
Blufflands State Trail, $970,000
Casey Jones State Trail, $700,000
Gateway State Trail Bridge, $750,000
Gitchi Gami State Trail, $1,600,000
Great River Ridge Trail, $1,500,000

President, Hutchinson Hospital Auxiliary
I am writing to the friends of our community to request your assistance as a volunteer in the Hutchinson Hospital Auxiliary. The auxiliary is celebrating 50 years of dedication as a volunteer this year. We are an older group sincerely dedicated to our tasks.
We need more of you to help us by volunteering four hours of your time once a month. Because of the shortage many of the volunteers are taking two and sometimes three shifts a month.

This letter is in response to the July 17 Leader editorial, “A solid school upgrade plan.”
At what point in time are the citizens of Hutchinson going to wake up and smell the roses? In 2006, voters vetoed a plan to build a brand new high school, improve athletic facilities to bring Hutchinson to the status quo with the rest of the Missota Conference, and renovate the current high school into an elementary school for a total of $77.8 million.
Have anything planned for next Tuesday night? If not, we encourage you to attend the National Night Out event in your neighborhood.
Chances are you’ll be able to walk there. And on the way there, why not take a close look at your neighborhood?
Do you feel safe where you live? Do you have any concerns about speeders, unsupervised dogs or trashy yards? If you do, be sure you tell the police officer you’ll meet when you arrive at your neighborhood National Night Out event. She or he will look into it for you.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has cancelled the air pollution health advisory issued Tuesday, Jul. 29, through Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008.
Changes in the air quality forecast call for a low pressure system that will bring in moderate dry winds from the north, limiting particle formation. The Thursday through Friday forecast includes a weak cold front with light winds. The air quality index readings should peak daily in the low to mid-moderate range (approximately 51 to 65 on the Air Quality Index) which will be well below health thresholds.
