Something to tide you over

Hey there faithful readers:

I am going to be away from the office these next two weeks, so my film blog will fall eerily silent. Never fear — if you get bored, you can just watch this video of kittens at play over and over again.

See, the one kitten loves sitting in the tissue box so much, he refuses to let his siblings have a go at it. Who's more easily amused? The kittens with their tissue box? Or us humans who actually just sit and watch them? Hmmm ...

The season opener is here!

All week long I've been counting down the five most exciting moments from last season's Hutchinson Huskies season. Finally, today, we get to No. 1 on the heels of the season opener with Cold Spring.

Game time is 7:30 p.m. Come out and support the squad all season long.

Moment No. 1:
Mankato 5, Hutchinson 4 (12 inn)
It is always said that in an extra inning game, it’s too bad one team has to lose. With elimination on the line in the opening round of the Class B Amateur State Baseball Tournament Thursday, it was truly unfortunate that one team’s season had to end.

July 20: Dassel-Cokato 7, Huskies 1
For five innings, it appeared one run might win Friday night’s amateur ball game between Hutchinson and Dassel-Cokato. With a division title on the line for the Huskies and a first-round bye for the Saints, it was locked up at zero until things turned ugly in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Huskies starter Corey Ryks was lifted for ace Adam Padrnos to begin the inning. Manager Lee Kuhl said with the Saints coming through the batting order for the third time, he wanted to change the look up. The Saints weren’t fooled.

The Leader wants to help motorists share information about ride sharing. With gas prices rising quickly, ride sharing is a financially wise alternative to traveling alone.

Please feel free to post information here about where you want to go and when, and whether you need a ride. It might be a ride to work or to visit someone.

Or post information about your own commute, and whether you are able to provide a ride to anyone going in the same direction at the same time.

Unwanted, abandoned dog

Hello,
Is there anyone out there who wants a dog? It appears someone has once again dropped off their unwanted pet thinking because it's being dropped in the country someone else will give it a good home and take care of it. That's a myth!
The dog seems to be sitting on the road waiting for whoever dropped it off. If you happen to know anyone who did this or if you'd like this dog, please come and get it, it does not have any food or home and will be probably end up being hit by a car or starving. It's on Page Ave north of Hutchinson, it's been there a day now.

Report ice out at area lakes

The ice appears to have gone out on the South Fork of the Crow River in Hutchinson today (Tuesday, April 15). It appears a boat could navigate the entire pool behind the Main Street dam, which, I believe, is used to define official ice out on Rainy and other lakes in Minnesota.

If readers track ice out at area lakes or the river, please post dates and ice out conditions here. Ice out seems to be later this year.

Robin, heron, wood duck sightings

Last night two herons over by the Gopher Campfire Wildlife Sanctuary in Hutchinson. I assume they are migrating back to the area, and didn't stay all winter.

Have any robins been spotted yet?

Last year, I hung a wood duck house. But, the vacancy light stayed on all spring and summer. Have any wood ducks been spotted yet?

How much snow has fallen at your home?

The National Weather Service reports, "A swath of snowfall accumulations between 6 and 9 inches will occur across a portion of the area, with isolated higher totals possible. The snow will taper off this evening, although more chances for light snow will arrive this weekend. "

Tortilla Pie
1 cup frozen corn kernels
2 green onions sliced thin
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1-1/2 cup salsa
1 can 15-19 ounces, low sodium black beans, rinsed and drained
2 large size tortillas
1 package of reduced fat shredded Mexican cheese blend
1 tablespoons cilantro leaves or if you are not a cilantro fan, use parsley
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Spray large cookie sheet with cooking spray.

Crispy Chocolate hearts

Ingredients
1 (12-ounce) package semisweet chocolate morsels  1/2 cup peanut butter  2 cups crisp rice cereal  1 1/2 cups peanuts  1 1/2 cups miniature marshmallows  2 (2-ounce) chocolate bark coating squares, melted
(see below for substitution)
 White sprinkles
Preparation
Microwave chocolate morsels in a large glass bowl at HIGH for 2 minutes or until melted, stirring every 30 seconds. Stir in peanut butter, stirring until well blended.

Crab Salad in Crisp Wonton Cups

For the Wonton Cups:
Cooking spray
18 wonton wrappers, thawed (if frozen)
2 teaspoons canola oil
1/4 teaspoon salt
For the dressing:
1 teaspoon lime zest
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1/4 teaspoons salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried hot red pepper flakes
2 tablespoons olive oil
For the salad:
1/2 pound lump crabmeat, picked over
1 stalk celery, finely diced
1/2 cup finely diced mango
1/4 cup thinly sliced scallions
2 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh cilantro leaves
