The Missota Conference
New Prague 50, Red Wing 6
* The host Trojans ran some off tackle. They had some dives up the middle. It didn't matter where New Prague ran the ball. Red Wing was not able to stop it.
The Trojans amassed six rushing touchdowns and 326 rushing yards on 40 carries as they cruised to a 50-6 victory Friday over the Wingers.
"We struggled pretty mightily on both sides of the ball," Red Wing coach Matt Schultz said.
The Wingers, meanwhile, gained just 57 yards on 30 carries. Sophomore quarterback Patrick Kelly didn't fare much better. He was under pressure for much of the night and completed 4 of 11 pass for 25 yards and he threw one interception. Senior Dan Roschen, Red Wing's regular starting quarterback, was moved to fullback for the game. It was just one of many lineup moves Schultz made because of injuries and illness.
With 1:36 to play in the fourth quarter, Kelly hit Luke Johnson for a 6-yard touchdown pass to account for the Wingers' lone score of the game. Johnson led the team with two catches for 18 yards. Junior Travis Balster finished with seven yards receiving and the other two receptions. Coleman Kelly rushed for a team-high 65 yards on 17 carries.
Northfield 27, Prior Lake 10
* It was a happy homecoming for the Northfield High School football team. The Raider defense limited Prior Lake’s offense to just 213 total yards and three points over 3 1/2 quarters. Northfield’s offense grinded out drives and made big plays when it needed to.
The result was a 27-10 victory Friday night at Memorial Field, which is Northfield’s first home win of the season. Sam Maus finished the night with three touchdowns, two through the air. He was 8-for-10 passing for 126 yards and ran for 47 yards.
Farmington 41, Holy Angels 12
* Derek Waldbillig rushed for four touchdowns as the Farmington football team overcame a slow start with 34 unanswered points in a 41-12 rout of Holy Angels Friday night at a roofless Stardome in Richfield.
The win secured at least a share of the Missota Conference title for the Tigers. Farmington will go after their third undefeated regular season in four years Wednesday night when they travel to Shakopee.
Section 2AAAA
Rocori 19, Willmar 17
* Willmar led the Central Lakes conflict until the final two minutes. That’s when Rocori’s Chris Lardy ran around right end on third down to score from four yards out and put Rocori ahead 19-17.
With 1:53 left, Willmar still had a chance. Quarterback Alec Saunders moved his team down field with an 18-yard sideline pass to Adam Fagerstrom and a 21-yard throw to Jordan Smith over the middle to reach the Rocori 22 — within Smith’s field goal range.
But on third-and-15, Saunders’ pass was deflected into the arms of linebacker Aaron Schneider to end any comeback hope and secure the win, ending Rocori’s four-game losing streak.
Luverne 21, Marshall 7
* Luverne may have run over Marshall's hopes for a Southwest Conference title Friday when the Cardinals had 289 rushing yards in a 21-7 win. Both teams entered the game undefeated in the conference. Luverne must beat Redwood Falls next week to win it outright. If Luverne loses next week, Marshall may have a share of the conference title.
"This was basically the conference championship," MHS head coach Terry Bahlmann said. "You have to give Luverne credit. They've been in the finals for the last two years. They're a good football team."
Marshall had only 54 rushing yards, compared to Luverne's 289 yards. Trey Welch led the Tigers with 14 carries for 56 yards. Luverne was the Class 2A state runner-up in 2007.
Henry Sibley 54 (West. St. Paul), New Ulm 8
* 5A Henry Sibley routed New Ulm in nonconference football action Friday night. Kyle Fischer had 134 yards passing and Justin Brethorst had six catches for 47 yards. Garrett Fischer had four catches for 39 yards and he caught an 8-yard touchdown pass.
Defensively, Bryan Kehren had 14 tackles and Tyler Polzin had 11 tackles for the Eagles. New Ulm (3-4) hosts Blue Earth Area Wednesday.
Mankato West 27, Rochester Mayo 14
* Let the Owatonna talk begin. The No. 1-rated Scarlets defeated Rochester Mayo 27-14 in a Big Nine Conference football game Friday at Todnem Field. The victory clinched the No. 1 seed in Section 2AAAA playoffs for West, and it set up a game Wednesday at Owatonna for the conference championship, a matchup that’s been talked about since the season began.
