The Missota Conference
Farmington 44, Red Wing 0
* You'll be hearing more about these three names later this week in my Farmington preview - QB Brent Beenken, RB Derek Waldbillig and WR Josh Zitzmann. All three were starters a year ago. They all did big things against Red Wing, which appears haeded for a winless season.
Waldbillig rushed for 112 yards; Beenken threw for nearly 150 yards and three touchdowns in the first half; and Zitzmann caught two TD passes, returned an INT for a score and knocked down a pass in the end zone.
Red Wing finished just 2-for-9 for 12 yards through the air, as Roschen and Kelly split time at quarterback. The Wingers also struggled to move the ball on the ground against a physical Farmington front, totaling only 103 yards on 38 attempts.
New Prague 28, Shakopee 14
* The Trojans rebounded from a tough section loss in week one to beat everyone's sleeper team of the year in the conference. Eric Meger, who returned an INT for a TD last season against Hutch, had three touchdowns. Andy Zweber also caught a passing TD.
Shakopee managed two fourth-quarter TDs to avoid the shutout. It was the Dellwo-McBeain combo that scored the two Saber TDs.
Prior Lake 22, Holy Angels 14
* Prior Lake trailed by a point in the second quarter until T.J. Larson connected with Jake Bolks for the eventual game-winning score. The Lakers added a safety in the third quarter for the only scoring of the second half.
James Shields threw one TD for Holy Angels, while Rob Kuehne ran for another.
Section 2AAAA
Fergus Falls 31, Willmar 22
* Sophomore QB Mike Dunham threw for 273 yards, including 133 to Jordan Smith, but the rushing attack of the Otters was too much for the Cardinals.
Ike Carlson had 8 carries for 109 yards, while Matt Mithaugen ran 24 times for 144 yards.
Marshall 40, Luverne 7
* Another week year of Class AA opponents for the Tigers. After rushing for 411 yards last week against New Ulm, Trey Welch led the Tigers rushing attack with 125 yards on the ground and one touchdown, but it was the passing game that led the Tigers to such a convincing win.
Andrew Larsen threw for 195 yards and three TDs.
New Ulm 21, St. Peter 20
* Kyle and Garrett Fischer - hooked up on two touchdown passes, one of 19 yards and the other covering five yards while Billy Schwarz hit paydirt on a five yard scoring jaunt.
For the game, Kyle Fischer was 21-of-35 for 192 yards and two touchdowns, while Garrett Fischer latched onto 11 passes for 102 yards and two scores.
Mankato West 40, Mankato East 10
* East was no match for West once again as the 2AAAA favorites routed crosstown rivals for the "Jug."
West finished with 359 yards of offense, 218 of which came on 32 rushing attempts. RB Paul Berndt had 90 yards on 12 carries. QB Ray Teachout (left game w/ sprained ankle) completed 6 of 9 passes for 91 yards, with Aaron Richter grabbing three for 56 yards.
Benesh completed 6 of 15 passes for 127 yards, but Kenthen King, who rushed for 301 yards last week, was held to 50 yards on 21 carries for East.
Waconia 26, Litchfield 17
* The Wildcats rallied for 14 points in the fourth quarter to beat Litchfield, who had won in week one. Chris Leivermann ran for TDS of 40 and 22 in the quarter. He also ran another one earlier in the game and caught another from Chris Graff.
Orono 59, Mound-Westonka 0
* The Whitehawks trailed 45-0 to the Wright County Conference favorites. Orono plays at home against Glencoe-Silver Lake next week (game of the week?).
