Fall season recap

» Read similar stories filed under:

The fall sports season comes to a close Wednesday at the State Swimming and Diving Meet. It was quite a season for the Tigers.

The football team made it to the section finals, and beat state semifinalist New Prague for homecoming.
The volleyball team placed second in both conference play and section play. The team also won the Simley Invite.
The boys' cross country took the Missota Conference, had a three-time meet winner in Kyle Schmidt and finished third at sections.
The girls' tennis team finished second in conference, and won a match in the playoffs.
The girls' cross country team made great strides and almost had a state qualifier in Britney Anderson.
The girls' swimming and diving team had four swimmers qualify for the state tournament.

Starting this winter, the paper will have an All-Area preseason team, and likely an All-Area team for each sport. So, I thought I'd come up with a mock one for the fall sports of football and volleyball. I have to do a little more research on football, but here is my volleyball team.

First Team
1. Megan Mickolichek, Hitter, G-SL
2. Sam Broderius, Setter, BLH
3. Laci Murtha, Hitter, Hutch
4. Laura Carlson, Hitter, Hutch
5. Brittany Euerle, Hitter, Litch
6. Megan Lambertson, Hitter, Litch

Second Team
1. Brittany Ribar, Setter, McLeod West
2. Kasey Peterson, Hitter, BLH
3. Ashley Maher, Setter, Hutch
4. Becca Zirk, Hitter, D-C
5. Amanda Kinzler, Setter, G-SL
6. Aimee Peterson, Hitter, D-C

Tell me what you think? Did I forget anybody?

I'm glad to hear that people are reading this, but a little disappointed that nobody commented that I forgot a certain someone.

I did forget Brittany Stamer from Hutchinson, so she would be inserted on the second-team as a hitter. Sorry :).

I will state this so that everybody is aware. I spent about five minutes putting this list together based on numbers. I never once saw D-C or Litch play, but have seen their numbers, and I based my teams on them.

Clearly with the season Hutchinson had, I could put the entire starting six on these two teams, but I'm trying to reward players from each team, and trying to include all schools.

Please don't take anything away from this but a little fun. This was me trying to add some content to the Web site. If you disagree, sign up and post what you think. That's what this forum is for.

I definately agree with the fact that our Varsity starting lineup could all be on this list. Melissa Grams, Kim Hacker and Carissa Hahn all provided valuable experience and talent on the floor this year and without this "team" effort this year's successful team would not have made it to the section finals. Kudos to the whole team including those girls who provided positive support from the bench as well. We had girls rotating to different positions all year long and it only demonstrates the versatility of the 2006 team. I am looking forward to the 2007 season!

Great point. I think this holds true with a lot of teams, but especially true with this year's volleyball team.
Early on with Laci hurting, you had girls such as Jaci and Carissa step up and get some big kills. When Laura was hurt, you had Melissa and Brittany step up and pick up the slack, and with Brittany moving to hitter, that wasn't easy. Carissa also moved back to libero late in the season and did a fantastic job.
It's still nine months away until the start of the next volleyball season, but with a very solid nucleus of players as well as some talented players coming up from the other teams, I wouldn't be surprised to see Hutchinson in the final agains with Waconia or Marshall.
