From the KDUZ/KARP news web site: The Hutchinson City Council Tuesday night approved raising the monthly rates for sewer, water, storm water, and garbage services for 2007. In general, the council approved increases of about 40 percent for sewer, 40 percent for water, 5 percent for the storm water utility, and from 3.4 percent to 5.3 percent for garbage rates, depending on the size of garbage container used. City officials say the garbage rate for seniors and low income qualified residents will remain the same.
A 40% water and a 40% sewer increase? What gives? Most individuals are lucky if they got a 4% salary increase this year. Why the huge increases?

Back to page topThe rates quoted from the KDUZ/KARP site are somewhat incomplete. The 40-percent increases talked about are the commulative increases for the next several years that will be needed to pay for the new water plant coming online in March and upgrades planned for the wastewater plant later this year.
The city needed the water plant to meet increased demand. It was operating at near capacity. The wastewater plant has to meet new state and federal regulations, which tighten controls on phosphorus and other emissions.
For a more complete look at the rates approved for 2007, see a story elsewhere on the Leader Web site. For a complete listing of water, sewer, garbage and storm water utility rates increases approved, see the print edition of the Jan. 11 Hutchinson Leader.
Hope this helps.
