2nd Ave S. Stoplight is quite lengthy.

Yesterday as I drove up to the stoplight on 2nd Ave South, I pulled up behind a pickup and we sat and sat and sat. I couldn't go around the pickup to turn because it was a pretty big truck. This was fairly early and there we no cars on mainstreet. I actually started watching the clock and about 90 seconds went by without any traffic on mainstreet. Finally the truck ahead of me took a right and I followed. Who knows how long this light had been red and stayed red for 2nd Ave but I was about 2 blocks on main and the light was still green for mainstreet.

Over the years, I have tried to cross at this intersection but many times have found myself only advancing 2 cars per green light. One time I sat at this light for 3 green lights. The driver ahead of me had quite the lip action going, but I found it comical. I know this intersection is terrible and when I use it, I expect to spend about 5 or 6 minutes there. Anything less is a gift.

The problem is so many cars are turning and you have to wait behind them to continue straight. Other cars try to squirt by which is illegal by passing on the right, so the opposing cars hesitate to turn because someone may be coming straight through.

I dont have to use this intersection often but when I have to go to the post office or the bank, I can plan on spending my afternoon at the stoplight.

Why cant the light be cycled for a longer period of time for those crossing 2nd Ave? Why does it take about 15 minutes to even get a green light? I know the 15 minutes is an exaggeration but it does seem that way. Those sitting there revving their engines trying to make a break for it are evidence this intersection is quite the problem.

Sometimes if you flash your headlights on bright the censor will pick it up and cause the light to change. Granted you can't always do that but it has worked for me in the past.

I'll let you in on my little secret. I rarely ever use that light unless I'm turning right and going south on Main Street or need to go straight. If I need to go north on Main and heading up 15, from 2nd Ave I turn on Franklin and go up to the 1st Ave light(between DQ and Quiznos) as that light is weight/pressure sensitive. Now that I've said that the city will probably fix it to a timed light like the 2nd Ave and Washington Ave lights. :^(

Now don't tell anyone about my secret.*wink*

2nd Ave Stop Light: Digger,...

2nd Ave Stop Light: Digger, I thought I was the only one who knew that trick. Haha. I have used a spot light also and that worked everytime. FYI: I had a spotlight in my car because I was taking it over to my fathers because he left it at my house after working on something. Just in case you were wondering.

Leaderreader, I too get myself over to the DQ light if I can. Now with Quiznos there though, the afternoon cars backing up can be dangerous too. I appreciate your humor on the light getting changed to be like the others.

I think something needs to be said about us even having this conversation. Within a couple of hours, the both of you have acknowledged the need for "tricks" or "paths to avoid" this intersection.

Can the Hutchinson Leader run an article which addresses why the lights are so long at these two intersections? Maybe there is a logical answer, but when the traffic at 2nd is shooting around cars and backed up for 3 green lights when there are only 7 cars waiting (yes - two cars crossed each time), something needs to be adjusted. I have even seen cars shoot through the intersection long afer the light is yellow, sometimes red, just so they dont have to wait one for one more red light.

I would think another 30 seconds would help so much.
