I'm listening, but disagree

What Hutchinson needs is some fine dining! It's amazing there isn't a single place in our city that can be considered "Fine Dining". My wife is sick of celebrating our anniversary at Burger King.

Having grown up in the cities, I love going to restaurants and bars that brew their own beer such as Green Mill and O'Gara's in my old neck of the woods. I've even had friends go to Vine Park Brewery in St. Paul and make their own.

Living in a smaller community such as Hutchinson, I don't expect the choices I once had when I lived in St. Louis Park and St. Paul. So, I'm not sure you will ever get your wish. I think it will be Miller and Bud forever.

Fine dining is a whole another topic. The one thing I have to say about that is you might have to drive 20-30 minutes sometimes. And that's anywhere you live.

Back to page top

Not every place in town serves just Miller and Bud on tap. If you look around, some places serve in the area serve Killian's Red (yum) and Leine's Creamy Dark (double-yum).

What I would really like to see is some place serving Guinness on tap. Guinness out of a bottle is not nearly as good. Guinness out of those tall cans (with the plastic ball thingy inside) is pretty decent, but there's nothing like Guinness on tap.

Not to sound like a beer commercial or anything ....

If you've never been to the German restaurant, they have about 80 beers available. Patrons can order a beer at their bar in the back, if they are not hungry.

In response to all those searching for a fine dining experience in Hutchinson. If you think that franchises haven't looked into Hutchinson as a possibility your wrong. There are several reasons that are scaring them away. 1st the population of Hutchinson is borderline at best. There just aren't enough people here who are willing to spent the dollars necessary for a franchise to even consider moving here.
2nd the residents of Hutchinson are not supporting the current bars and restaurants that they already have. That fact alone is going to keep the private investor from opening a restaurant on their own. I'ts hard to put a million dollars ( typical estimate for a small restaurant) when you see other businesses struggling and closing. For some reason, and I don't understand why, people in this town are crazy about fast food. Until you see either a population growth or local restaurants shown some financial success, franchises are just going to go elsewhere.

Tubby Smith new coach of the Gophers mens basketball team. WOW, I can't believe the athletic program there actually was aggressive enough to get the best available coach in all of college basketball. Finally there may be something to get excited about in U mens basketball ,instead of scandals and disappointment. Good For The U.

I'd also frequent a place that had a better selection of beer, but am guilty of not getting to the Bavarian Haus as often as I should. Maybe a brew pub would be asking too much, but an Old Chicago in town would make me as giddy as a schoolgirl.

On the subject of outside businesses, I was told that the city does not claim renters in its population because if it was too high they would not be able to have the sole liquor store. Not sure if there is any truth to this at all, but I can attest to the fact that Applebee's is ALWAYS packed. Because of that I tend to go to Lamplighter's when I want a good meal with a beer. I don't see why an independently owned place like that couldn't stock a couple extra micros/imports.

Back to page top

I think the rumor of not claiming renters just for extra $$$ in booze revenue is not even close. A city has much more to gain by having a larger population then a share in the liquor business. But if you like that rational as to why Hutchinsons's population is stagnent so be it.

The other poster is right. Until Hutchinson shows real population growth & support for it's current businesses nothing will change. We could not even sustain a Cub, K-Mart or Wendys, what does that say??

For the people thinking a Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Chilli's or a TGIF's is coming keep dream'en. Hutch's answer to fine dining is Applebees!!! Get used to it!!!!!!!!!

The city of hutchinson doesnt have a share in the liquor bussiness, it is the liquor bussiness, and the liquor bussiness is grand. If u dont think it is go up to the liquor store for ten minutes and count how many people go in and outta there. Add to the top of that an escalating dui rate(which i do not want to get into)and u have big bucks! More bucks than any redlobster or any store for that matter is ever going to generate. Why claim the people when they are already here?

Any well known "fancy sit-down" type restaurant chain would copletely thrive in Hutch. It's discouraging to think that potential franchisees would be that close minded to compare the demise of a KMart or Wendy's to something like Timberlodge, Ciatti's, Olive Garden, Old Chicago, etc. Seems like comparing apples and anvils to me!

Any thoughts on Erbert and Gerbert's? I always thought this could also succeed in Hutch although it would be adding more fast food. It's a bit like Subway (but cheaper) and the big advantage is they DELIVER. Too busy to leave the house for food now and it's nothing but pizza. Pizza's great, but a good cheap sandwhich with tasty soup would sure be a nice change of pace!

Take care and have a great upcoming Easter everyone!

It's not comparing apples to anvils, it is apples to apples. Find me a city of 13,000 people that have either a Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Old Chi or Timberlodge...? I don't think you'll find one.

Until Hutchinson shows major population increases or adds some real jobs this will not change. Hutchinson is 13,000 people with a limited draw from outside, we have the cities to the east, St. Cloud to the north, Willmar to the west & Mankato to the south. Hutchinson will not explode with new growth until there are jobs to support people moving here and/or you see some improvement to HWY7. Hutch is not St. Cloud or Mankato, don't fool yourself.

Your comments are exactly...

Your comments are exactly why you won't get a fine dining restaurant. Everyone is looking for more fast food options. The day when enough people in this town are willing to pay a little more for good food, instead of looking for SOMETHING CHEAPER then you may get a fine dining establishment.

Why are so many people wishing for more chain-style restaurants?

Maybe their food intake lacks fresh foods. I don't know anything , but to eat healthy...my current spending on groceries, produce, meat and poultry alone is ~$275+ / month, and rarely do I eat out because its not worth the big ******.

I don't go to fast food places, I go to the cities for dining out. Fast food, you might as buy 16 snickers bars and eat it.
