Favorite city in Mexico

» Read similar stories filed under:

How does spring break in Mexico sound? Grande. But, there are so many cities.

What is you favorite city in Mexico? Why do you like it?

Acapulco seems to be inexpensive. The New York Times recently published a story featuring 36 hours in Mexico City. Has anyone been to these cities?

Chicago chef and host of "Mexico One Plate at a Time," Rick Bayless, visited the Twin Cities Public TV studios Saturday. Recent episodes of his show feature the Yukatan peninsula and the city of Playa del Carmen.

With so many flights available and spring break upon us, which city do you recommend to Leader readers planning to go to Mexico?

I live in Acapulco and Toluca. These are great cities for Northamericans to visit.

There are many cheap accommodations as well as pricey all inclusives. Other cities which are interesting and have a range of accommodations include Mexico City, Guanajuato, Morelia, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Merida, Mazatlan.

Stay away from places that just prey on high end travelers: Cuernavaca, Taxco, San Miguel Allende, Valle de Bravo.

I have not been to my favorite place in quite a few years, maybe it has changed a bit. It is the LasVentannas resort in Los Cabos. It is between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas in the Baja peninsula with white sand beaches. It is a 5 star resort and a bit pricey but worth it. There are 61 suites there with an ocean view. They have a website now. www.lasventanas.com

I also enjoyed the Rosarito beach area many years ago, I am sure it is much different now. At that time there was still a few dirt roads and very friendly people. Who knows what it is like now. I know they told us a lot of "movie stars" stayed there.

My newest fav is Huatulco, a smaller town and smaller resorts. Always had good weather, but there was a lot of new developments going on then. The resorts are back in the bays. 2 other resort towns close to that are Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido. I think I will go back there again, hopefully someday.
