The Leader is giving away $100 in compact fluorescent light bulbs to one lucky reader. How do you win? Change a standard light bulb to a CFL at home or at work and report it to the newspaper by clipping out the form from the Tuesday, Feb. 20 print edition. It is on page 6A.
The goal is to change 500 bulbs at reader's homes or workplaces. A tally of all of the bulbs changed in the month between Feb. 20 and March 19, 2007, will be published later along with the winner of the prize.
CFLs are gaining popularity among consumers because the bulbs burn only 25 percent of the electricity of standard bulbs. CFLs have also come down in price, and are selling for about $1, or less. During the life of one of these bulbs, consumers save about $36 in electricty for about 50 cents in extra up front cost.
Have you changed any of these bulbs in your home? Did you know CFLs come in a variety of light tones? Share your story by posting it at this forum.

I've change all my light...
Back to page topI've change all my light bulbs to fluorescent light bulbs. My electric bill did drop almost 10 bucks a month. I also like these bulbs because they last a very long time without changing them. Only bad thing about these little fluorescent light bulbs is some fixtures and lamps they will not fit in correctly. But if you can use them, they are great. Nice thing too, they don't get real hot like a old style light bulb.

Back to page topThis week we exchanged 8 of our standard bulbs to CFLs (dining room, living room, bathroom). Not certain if we like the light in the bathroom...would like to see if there are 3-way CFLs for the living room lamps. Looking forward to seeing if there's a difference on our monthly power bill.

Back to page topI would switch over to the CFLs (compact fluorescent light bulb) but it is not recommended to use the standard CFLs with dimmer switches. I can not find the "dimming" CFLs.
I just wanted to make sure people weren't using the wrong bulbs.
GeLighting.com has the following:
Can I use a compact fluorescent light bulb with a dimmer switch?
To use a compact fluorescent bulb on a dimmer switch, you must buy a bulb that's specifically made to work with dimmers (check the package). GE makes a dimming compact fluorescent light bulb (called the Energy Smart Dimming Spirals®) that is specially designed for use with dimming switches. We don't recommend using regular compact fluorescent bulbs with dimming switches, since this can shorten bulb life. (Using a regular compact fluorescent bulb with a dimmer will also nullify the bulb's warranty.)
Fluorescent light is ugly....
Back to page topFluorescent light is ugly. The light is horrible...and if you break them, they release a toxic gas.
Wait for the advancement to LED lightbulbs.
Late.

Back to page topI agree that the flourescent light is rather ugly(kind of yellowish), but they do make "daylight" flourescent bulbs now as well. I have these in almost every light in my house and they are great. A 60 watt looks truely like a regular 60 watt bulb but better. Try one of these out and see if you like it. I too am waiting for the LED advancements, I even switched all of my X-mas lights this year to LED, they are great and the future of all lighting if they can make them work at a decent price.
