I was watching the Little League World Series last week as I do every year. I was excited to see a team from Minnesota playing. The team from Coon Rapids played some exciting baseball and was fun to watch. They finished one win short of making the playoffs but I thought they represented the State of Minnesota very well.(Or so I thought). Then I see on the news two players from Coon Rapids do one of the most discusting acts I have seen. After losing their final game, two players decide to show their class and intelligence by spitting on their hands before shaking hands with the other team. Instead of this team being the toast of the state for a great showing, they turn into the disgrace of the state by showing no sportsmanship at all. Hopefully the Little League World Series Commitee will step in and discipline them. Maybe Minnesota shouldn't be allowed to participate in upcoming years until the players learn what sports are all about.

While I agree that the act...
Back to page topWhile I agree that the act of spitting and shaking is disgusting, banning a state from play in the Little League World Series based on the actions of two kids is highly unnecessary.
Trust me when I say this, the boys will learn their lessons countless times over their lives. Instead of being the kid that you saw hit a home run in the Little League World Series, it will be "hey, you're the kid that spit on your hand." How embrassing that will get over the next couple of years.
This is not an excuse by any means, but remember these kids are 12. They make mistakes. Hopefully they will learn what they did is wrong and realize that it is just a game.

BUT, they had to have learned it from somewhere....and they probably have seen their idols doing something similar.
That is the BIGGEST problem with sports, there are the few that wreck it, and they are glamorized in the news, and others see it. If they are punished for the actions early on, maybe these youngsters would know they will suffer the consequences if they do something SO dumb, but nothing happens but get publicity and now EVERYONE knows who they are. Otherwise, not too many would have known that Coon Rapids was there...aside from those that play ball.
My son got told in 4th grade the only way he could play ball on the playground was if he touched a teachers bottom!! I am glad he chose NOT to become a "jock" and think that he is priveleged because of it.
i hope they don't chew...

I agree with you, Eric....

Those kids will deal with that shame for a long time. Often times that is worse than one single punishment that affects a lot of others who weren't at fault.
On a side note, it was heart wrenching to see the kids from Georgia come out and hug the kids from Japan after the final game. Adults at times can learn from the emotions of children.
