Totalfilm.com recently posted its list of "The Greatest Directors Ever."
They hit almost all the greats, and if you're looking for a CliffsNotes-style guide to great cinema, look no further.
As with any list of this sort, there are some blatantly obvious omissions: Jules Dassin, Jean Cocteau and Alain Resnais are nowhere to be found. Come to think of it, Jan Švankmajer really ought to be on the list, too. And so should Terry Gilliam.
Man, this is kind of a weak list. But it’s a start. It will have to do for now, as I am too busy/lazy at the moment to come up with my own list.
For the record, here are the top 10 directors, according to Totalfilm.com:
1. Alfred Hitchcock
2. Martin Scorsese
3. Steven Spielberg
4. Howard Hawks
5. Francis Ford Coppola
6. Orson Welles
7. Ingmar Bergman
8. Stanley Kubrick
9. Peter Jackson
10. David Fincher
