If "love stinks" is the

If "love stinks" is the theme, pretty much any of David Cronenberg's movies will work. Troubled romantic relationships are at the core of many of his works.

John Frankeheimer's "Seconds" is another good one. Rock Hudson plays a guy having a mid-life crisis in that movie. He's unhappy in his marriage and decides to change his whole life around. Turns out it wasn't his marriage that was lame - it was him! Very depressing stuff, and a strong influence on the psychological thriller "The Game," which starred Michael Douglas.

Those are the kinds of films which make for lousy date movies but are still entertaining.

For more mushy fare, you can't go wrong with "The Apartment." It's sweet and lovey-dovey but kind of dark, too. Good stuff.

- JLS -

Valentine's Day is a natural for romantic movies. What are your favorites. Feb. 14 can also be a dark day if you're alone. In that case, do you have a favorite non-romance to watch?
