J.J., I also feel "Return of the Jedi" benefited the most from the digital retouching. The Sarlacc in the special edition is so much cooler. It actually kind of has a personality. In the original version, it was just like this big boogery hole in the ground.

"Gonk!"

Empire was my fave. It was

Empire was my fave. It was even better when they re-released it with the new footage. Return of the Jedi needed the extra footage to be considered great because I am pretty sure that no one enjoyed the end of the original. Ewoks singing just didn't cut it.

One of my favorite movie moments was at the re-release of Star Wars in the mid 90's. Everyone knew what was going to happen, and when Luke made the shot the whole theater stood up and cheered. I laugh about that still today.

The last three were good because of new technology, but Revenge of the Sith had too much crammed into a short period of time.

Ooota Goota Solo?

I met "princessleia" at a party last night and it turns out her husband is an even bigger Star Wars geek than she is :-) I think she should talk him into signing up here as "hansolo."

Peanut, there's no doubt

Peanut, there's no doubt about it, "Star Wars" or "A New Hope" or whatever you want to call it is one of the coolest movies ever. It was actually the first movie I remember seeing as a child. I was three years old at the most, but I remember it well because it was such a traumatic experience. The opening fanfare of the John Williams score was so loud it pretty much scared ... well let's put this way, it's a good thing I was still in diapers. I think I spent the rest of the movie out in the lobby with my mom. Since then, I've come to appreciate "A New Hope" much more.

My first star wars movie,

My first star wars movie, was just called star wars. Now they renamed it the new hope. Thats probably my favorite star wars, because to me that was the first one I seen. Few years later they came out with the other two which was alright. When new hope came out, that was the biggest talk in school, kids had lunch boxes and some had cards of luke and chewbacca on it that we would trade each other. Back then the digital effects were ~*amazing*~. That was the latest and greatest of technology back then. Everyone wanted to be luke, and have a laser sword. The new star wars movies versus the old star wars movies is like comparing a atari 2600 vs. a playstation 3. Theres a big difference.
I can remember my parents taking me to that movie at the old theater down town hutch. When it was, one big theater. It didn't have 3 separate theaters back then. I liked that one huge theater back then, seemed more fun for some reason.
One other star wars movie I seen was at the old drive-in theater. That was out on Highway 7 east. Where now sits a motorcycle shop. (not far from the roller skating rink which is now pam's furniture) That was a neat theater too other then, back then we had one speaker that sat in the window of the car. (where mosquitos sometimes got in) And a little shack behind us where we ran to get popcorn. Other then the sound quality that was a fun theater too.
Still today, every thanksgiving I pop-in new hope and watch it.

My favorite "Star Wars"

My favorite "Star Wars" movie is the "Empire Strikes Back." The beginning of this movie is just great. I like the dramatic tension that develops when Luke is found missing and night is falling. After that, I like the whole scene as the Empire droid is blown up and the rebels realize the Empire has found them. From there, it's solid action as the rebels flee from their hideout as the Empire attacks. Who can forget the snow walkers? When I saw the "Gladiator," I thought of this scene. There's something immensely powerful as a massive army relentlessly bulldozes the weaker foe. There's so many things I like about this movie -- there is also that great scene where Han Solo is going to be carbonized and Princess Leia tells him that she loves him. What does he say, "I know." Cool.

Well, Your Worshipfulness,

Well, Your Worshipfulness, my favorite is definitely Episode 5, "The Empire Strikes Back."

The acting is so much better in this one than in the other five pictures. Han and Leia have that wonderful chemistry as they bicker back and forth before eventually falling in love. That brings a real human element to the story. C-3P0 and R2-D2 are the funniest in this picture. Yoda's introduction is great. "Mine, or I will help you not!" There are so many great moments in this movie, even just throwaway stuff. Have you ever noticed the way Lobot (the bald guy with the goofy headphones who works for Lando) gives this sidelong look to Lando? I think it's right after he says, "This deal is getting worse all the time." It's a very loaded expression, from a character who never says a word. That's great acting.

The look of the movie is fantastic. The creepy blue and orange lighting in the carbonite freezing chamber makes the scenes shot there some of my favorites in the whole series of films.

It's interesting that ESB was, in my opinion, the best, but it was one that George Lucas neither wrote nor directed. He provided the overall story and turned the actual screenplay writing over to Lawrence Kasdan and Leigh Brackett. Irvin Kirschner directed this one, and I think he is much better at getting good performances out of his actors than Lucas is.

Not to knock Lucas. I think the man's a genius. But I think he's better at coming up with the big picture kind of stuff.

I'll go with what should be

I'll go with what should be No. 6, Return of the Jedi. You have my second favorite planet scene, Endor, in the forest (first being Hoth), a space battle scene, Han getting the girl, the Ewoks and a slave Leia.

ESB second, New Hope third, a prospect of part seven fourth.
