I've been told that if a sparrow nests in a bluebird house, you should get rid of the nest. I don't know if this rule also applies to black birds nesting is wood duck houses.

My wood duck house has an old nest in it. I didn't see any wood ducks in the house last year, but a black bird flew in and out of it last spring.

I checked the house Sunday and sprinkled a few wood chips over the old nest. I hope it was OK to leave the nest material in there. I've read conflicting reports about whether or not this is right.

One report said to clean the old nest out and replace it with sawdust. Another report said leaving the nest increases the chances for getting a duck to use the house.

I guess some wood ducks like old woodpecker nests in hollow trees. So, I can't believe an old black bird nest is much different.

We've seen one robin (not sure if it is the same one each time) coming to our heated bird bath for a few weeks already on the southeast side of Hutchinson.

Two robins were walking down Dale Street during lunch. There is plenty of water from the melting snow to drink along the curb, but I don't know how available worms are this time of year.

Last night two herons over by the Gopher Campfire Wildlife Sanctuary in Hutchinson. I assume they are migrating back to the area, and didn't stay all winter.

Have any robins been spotted yet?

Last year, I hung a wood duck house. But, the vacancy light stayed on all spring and summer. Have any wood ducks been spotted yet?
