Casino Royale aired on

Casino Royale aired on Showtime last weekend. I saw it at the theater, and was equally impressed seeing it a second time.
It seems like there is new life in the franchise, which is good news for Bond fans.
I read an earlier post of yours about an unmade Bond movie with Sean Connery in New York. It demonstrates the interest by many who want these movies to be the standard for action and story. Perhaps Mr. Bourne has helped steer Bond back to quality and entertainment.

NEVER say "With a killer

NEVER say "With a killer ensemble cast like that, how can wrong?" That'll get you just about everytime. I've been burned on so many movies that practically guaranteed to be good based on the cast. Here's a couple I can think of off the top of my head:

"America's Sweethearts", starring Billy Crystal, Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta-Jones, John Cusack, and Christopher Walken. I didn't make it through 30 minutes of this awful movie. YUCK!

"The Royal Tenenbaums", starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Owen and Luke Wilson, Bill Murray, Danny Glover, and Alec Baldwin. I HATED this movie! I guess it's just not my humor, because others loved it.

thanks, Jorge, i'll be sure to check out legion. i haven't seen any of the sequels for the exorcist so the book should be a real treat.

i forgot to mention the exorcism of emily rose, i think that's what it was called. that movie didn't scare me, but it did make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. that hasn't happened to me since march of 1993 when i was crawling on my belly across the lake because the ice was cracking.

Aura Lee: I've never read

Aura Lee: I've never read "The Exorcist" but I read William Peter Blatty's sequel, "Legion," which was adapted for the screen as "The Exorcist III." It’s a great book and I highly recommend it. It’s both creepy and intellectual. The movie's not bad, either. Not as great as the original "The Exorcist," but pretty decent as sequels go.

mmmmmmm yummy, i think i'll

mmmmmmm yummy, i think i'll have to order some green pea soup.

i thought the movie was a little creepy when i watched it years ago. it's because of the exorcist that the so called "scary" movies that were made after it didn't spook me one little bit. i hear people from the ages of 16-30 talk about how scared they were when the saw "the grudge", "the sixth sense" or "scary movie" for the first time. WEEEEAAAAAK. i remember watching scary movie and getting upset that people didn't notice that when the camera backs up slowly and the music starts to pick up, that someone was going to jump out of somewhere...so predictable. i enjoyed the 6th sense very much along with stir of echos. i liked stir of echos much more. but that's probaly because i saw that one first. kind of like when i saw deep impact before armageddon. anyways....

i read the exorcist about 6 years ago, and the book was disturbing. there are things that were discribed that i would have been better off not knowing. whenever i talk to someone who is thinking about reading the exorcist, i warn them. it's sort of like passing that point of no return. once you read it, you can't unread it. those images and descriptions are there forever.

anyone up for a road trip this summer to georgetown?

i'd see it.........if there was nothing else to do.....if i was infected with a virus and the only antidote for the virus would be watching this movie.....if someone held a gun to my mother's head and forced me to watch it.

sounds good i guess

Frankie Facebreaker here

Frankie Facebreaker here from Tornado Alley Rollergirls in Oklahoma.

I think this film will do incredible things for derby! There are a ton of people around here that still think derby is for girls gone bad...but we all know that's not the case at all! can't wait for this to come out!

There should be a national event where all derby leagues go and see the film on the same day at the same time! how cool would that be!

“Whip It” might reel in

“Whip It” might reel in big bucks if the response to this report is any indication.

I've gotten more e-mails on this piece than any other blog entry in recent memory.

For starters, I got one from the screenwriter herself. Shauna Cross gave the following useful information: "Whip It takes place in Austin, Texas, (is) an adaptation of the book Derby Girl, and not in the mid-west."

I also heard from a reader in Texas:

My name is Vanessa Quinones aka Volatile Vixen of Hurricane Alley Roller Derby of Corpus Christi,TX. I just wanted to let you know we are all for the movie "Whip It." We are also here for it if you hear they need any ladies for the movie. Rock on Drew and rock on womens roller derby for life. We will change womens sports!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally, I got an e-mail from Leslie Wood aka Morgan Le Fate:

I for one love the fact of a possible movie concerning the revival of roller derby. I am President of the league here in Mobile, AL and all of our girls are ecstatic over this coming about. Way to go in giving all of the hard working girls who participate in derby a moment in the spotlight, and showing hopefully that it is definitely a sport to be reckoned with.

Internet buzz is no guarantee of later box office success, but I think “Whip It” seems like the right movie at the right time.

Jorge,
My dad was high

Jorge,

My dad was high school friends with Pete Manski. Indeed, many guitarists when in town would pay visits to meet Manski. He had guitars all of the wall signed personally from his fans of his work.

Unfortunately, Manski died, I believe in 1999 or 2000, in a car accident and the little guitar store with a lot of cool history closed.

On a personal note, I used

On a personal note, I used to live in St. Paul before I moved out to this area, about five years ago.

My wife, Beth, and I lived in an apartment near University and Fairview. A few blocks away was a guitar shop called Pete's Guitars. It was only open by appointment.

In 1998, Harrison paid a visit to Pete's Guitars. I think the story was, Harrison had long been a mail-order customer of Pete's. He had never been to the store, though, so he dropped in and later had a bite to eat at the Wendy's fast food restaurant next door.

This made the local paper — a celebrity sighting at Wendy's and an ex-Beatle, no less! I thought it was great that a guy who could afford to eat anywhere was cool with eating at Wendy's.

Looks like the new guy is already spilling the beans on
"Bond 22" details. In an interview posted on BourneStuntSimulator.Com, Bradley revealed he gets to smash Aston Martins and Ford GTs in the upcoming Bond flick.

The Ford GT is the company's $150,000 supercar.
