Paul Berg, minister of adult education at Peace Lutheran, e-mailed me and said there are eight sessions in the video series, "Bringing Up Kids Without Tearing Them Down," by Dr. Kevin Leman. For more information, call the church office at (320) 587-3031.

I just called the church office at Peace Lutheran to find out how many sessions are in the series. No one was available to answer my question, so I left a voicemail. When I find out, I'll post it. Thanks for reading the Hutchinson Leader Web site.
Chief2, you must have missed

Chief2, you must have missed the '74 carnival or still been wearing Huggies. Then again, your memory may not be as solid as that of the all-knowing Doc. Back in the day, the amusement acts and games of skill provided by the traveling entertainment people (formerly known as Carnies)were conducted right along the banks of the river. The lights from the ferris wheel and pick-a-duck booth would reflect on the water. The first rides/games would start next to Main Street and were dispursed west along (what is now) Kouba's parkway. Most years, the carnival would reach Hardees (Glen Street) or farther. After purchasing a carmel apple or bag of cotton candy, people would sit along the banks of the river or on one of the boulders positioned near the river. The entire event was visible from the highway and everyone who traveled Main Street -- thus it produced bigger crowds than the current shows. Athough recent events have been conducted closer to the water, they aren't the same as the ones the Good Doctor remembers.

Dr. Remulak,
You must have been gone over the 2009 Hutchinson Water Carnival, as most of the events (including the fireworks) were held in West River & Les Kouba Park.

Check it out: http://www.watercarnival.org/events.cfm#tues

If it's on a stick, it's OK

If it's on a stick, it's OK by me! There is no better feeling as a kid than sitting way up in a large combine on machine hill with a bag of mini doughnuts! Long live the state fair. It is a shame that the historic buildings and the traditional Hutch fair were destroyed and moved to a "tent city" and the Water Carnival is no longer held along the Crow River. I treasure the memories of the old water carnivals on the banks of the Crow, and the firework show you could watch from boats! The last great water carnival I can remember was the summer of 1974. So sad...

What a great event! The musicians were great and the setting was beautiful. We had a lot of fun and hope that it grows in future years. Thanks to the planning committee for making this a success!

We had a blast. I can't wait for next year. The musicians were great and very very friendly. I couldn't believe how well set up everything was. Great job whoever came up with and implemented this idea. We promise to bring more people with us next year.

I spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening at RiverSong down at West River Park tonight - great music, good food, arts & crafts, and wonderful atmosphere. I would encourage folks of all ages to check it out Saturday when three stages are going starting at 11:00. Fun workshops and kids activities are taking place as well. Sunday morning spiritual music starts at 9:00. RiverSong - it really is a celebration of music so enjoy! Thanks to all involved.

I'm assuming your HDTV was actually getting analog signals prior to the conversion (except for those few, mostly rural stations that converted when first allowed in Feb.) so now you are getting the digital signal that doesn't carry as well unless you upgrade (or tune) your antenna or switch to cable or satellite.

I have heard that the frequencies being vacated in the switch will be sold off for other uses, possibly netting the government $20 billion.

I purchased an HDTV last fall and used the digital converter receiving all of the "free" channels - picture perfect. About a week before the transition I had absolutely no picture at all. Amazing how our governement works - basically forcing the purchase of some type of service whether that is cable or dish - maybe it's part of the stimulus package!

From what I have heard, the issue with the digital signal is that it is not quite as strong as the old analog signal. Hutchinson and Litchfield were kind of on the fringe of decent reception under analog and may be too far out to expect good, consistent digital signals with anything less than the best antenna tuned exactly right.

Before switching to cable 2 1/2 years ago, we had a fairly tall antenna with a Channel Master booster into a co-axial network throughout our house. We got good reception on 2, 4, 5, 9, 11, 23, 29, 41 and 45, and somewhat less reception on 7 and 12. The signal was often weakened by summer atmospheric conditions. Channel 2 was almost unwatchable during the summer.

My in-laws in Litchfield get only very poor reception of 4, 5, 9 and 11 and little else. They likely will need to finally get cable since adding a converter box to an antenna system already getting poor reception probably will result in no reception at all. Unlike analog, which will give you a scratchy picture with poor reception, a poor digital signal seems to give you nothing, or at best a picture that breaks up all the time, much like when your cable signal occasionally breaks up. Seems Hutchinson residents, and Litchfield's, too, face the option of getting a better, taller antenna with a signal boosting system or biting the bullet and getting cable or satellite.
