The county board should hire

The county board should hire a consulting firm to evaluate this situation. I say put about $2 million into it, then quash the whole idea and leave things they way they are. That seems to a be a going trend for this county board. Commissioner Nies is very eager to combine the positions so his buddy Cindy Schultz can make more money.

The only thing that will help V's program is "Flubber" not rubber.

I saw HHS basketball coach V

I saw HHS basketball coach V inspecting the fair grounds facility with Park Guru Koglin a couple of weeks ago. Sounds like the dynamic duo are convinced that a rubberized surface will lead to fewer scraped knees and yes, believe it or not, a winning basketball team at the varsity level. Finally, the answer to our team's dismal performances! Al, why did you wait so long to come up with the answer?

Thanks for the list of facility users, Mr. Davis. I have seen high school groups using the facility for sports but I don't think any recreation department basketball teams use the facility -- only teams sponsored and organized by the basketball association. I don't think the recreation department is too big on using school space or county facilities. Afterall, they have their own Harrington Street facility to fill. I'd like to see a few more details from Koglin and some specifics on how he's going to gain an extra $10,000 in revenue. While you're at it Al, how long will a rubber floor last? How long has the current floor lasted? Will a rubber floor send some users packing because it won't fit their needs? And, Al Buddy, how are you going to ensure that vehicles in the building don't turn their wheels and grind up your rubber floor? Get us some answers, Al!

County parks mainstay Al K.

County parks mainstay Al K. seems to be short on facts and long on wishful thinking when it comes to a new rubberized floor. Which groups are asking for a less-forgiving floor? Scraped knees and elbows? If the volleyball and basketball players are hitting the floor that often, they're going to be suffering from carpet burns on the proposed rubber surface. That's a weak reason for a new floor. Wildfan seems to have a better grip on the numbers that Big K. Seems like there might be better uses for $180,000. Sorry Big K, SlingBlade has a better grip, too. Yo SlingBlade, I think you're onto something with the deli idea. Note to Big K: Looking for an ideal floor which will withstand vehicles driving over it? I think you already have it.

Terry,
It's too bad that such a large and progressive community can't even offer enough gym space at our schools. I just want to offer the Cashwise deli as an over-flow area for our schools crowded cafeteria's too.
See we don't need a new school...just gotta get more creative I guess.

Thank you, Terry, for the information. I thought some groups used it for basketball also, but I could be mistaken. I know that the charter school used it years ago for their PE program and that my kids played tennis in there. I know also that rental income, IF gotten, is good for the fairgrounds. Why have those great buildings for just a week a year? By all means look into rental ideas. Just do it judicially and with an eye towards actually making money, not just spending and hoping.

A couple of those groups

A couple of those groups using the building apparently include Hutchinson High School tennis teams, and many of the indoor youth sports offered through the Hutchinson Parks & Recreation Department because gym space/time at the schools is not available.

Anyone know of others, or perhaps which of the P&R youth sports use the commercial building?

Horse,
It would be a great help if we actually knew the names of the groups that readily used this cement floor building. To say that "many" or "several" use this seems vague. To say that the floor will pay for itself in 10 years is assuming that "no one" will use this without the rubber???

Many groups use the building

Many groups use the building for sports. That is not to say we need to spend money to fix the floor UNLESS the people in charge do their research and find that MORE groups will rent space. Then a PROPERLY done floor i.e. one that can hold up to vehicle travel also, could possibly be done. It is a known fact that sometimes you need to spend money to make money and IF the facility can EXPOTENTIALLY increase its income from this they should look at their facts and then make a choice. AND, be fully ready to defend those choices.

A new rubber floor??? How

A new rubber floor??? How many people on line have ever used the fairgrounds building for sports? Better yet, how many of you have fallen and scraped your knee? Give me a break! No outside skating rink but 180,000 for a rubber floor... Wouldn't it make more sense to rubberize the floor of the 1,000,000 tunnel nobody uses. How many people here have ever walked thru the tunnel? How many of you have fallen and scraped your knee?
If the community has 180,000... place it in a savings account until we can build a proper up-to-date school!

This is a great idea...

This is a great idea... spend $180,000 to get $10,000 more a year. I guess over the next 18 years we'll have that paid for. Well it only seems like logic to me. Maybe with the $180,000 that they will save by not making this mistake they could fill the position of outgoing Highway Supervisor Howard Manthei and take advantage of another Deputy Sheriff for free for the next 3 years and then pay the $35,000 for the fourth year that the Deputy is with the department. Again I guess that would just be common sense...oh well, we voted them in to make these wonderful decisions.
