Recycling consumer electronics in the Hutchinson area is a field that had until recently been left mostly to government entities, such as the McLeod County Solid Waste Recovery Facility.
But entrepreneurs Brian and Paula Hauer are stepping in to add to the convenience of disposing of computers, monitors, televisions, stereos, CD and DVD players, microwaves and eventually appliances. The Hutchinson residents have opened BMH Enterprises at 3 Michigan St. S.E., in the Crow River Glass building, to provide another outlet for those products.
“We’ve been around 10 months going to area towns for collection events. We have a circuit we hit every nine weeks, and there is no limit on how many we take,” Brian said.
The recycling business branched out from a florescent light-bulb selling operation Brian started.
“A Chaska business we sold bulbs to asked if I took in electronics for recycling. We decided to look into it,” he said. That led to a study of recycling operations regulations and getting a license for it. Hauer credited help he got from McLeod County Solid Waste Director Ed Homan.
