Hutchinson
I am perplexed as to the why the Hutchinson City Council would not budget for mosquito spraying. The fire chief has had or has West Nile virus, whether it came from the multitude of storm water ponds filled with stagnant water or not, one will never know. But to think that every time a project is proposed, another pond is included. It just adds to the potential for mosquito infestation. The money should not be an issue.
When the council allows Hutchinson money from whatever department to be spent on another park or rest area and spends $80,000 to buy the lot and then plans on another $250,000 for water, sewer and bathroom facilities, not to include ongoing maintenance forever, is not in my opinion good use of taxpayers’ dollars.
I doubt that very many Hutchinson residents will use this facility, but more than likely the traveling public will abuse it. Who pays again? You guessed it, the Hutchinson taxpayer again.
Thanks for raising the issue and hopefully this is not just a jawboning effort with no consideration.

I agree, and think that...
Back to page topI agree, and think that those that think the same should come to the next council meeting on September 10th at 5:30 to express what they want their elected officials to do.
If you followed the Leader Poll: you would see that of the 231 people that answered, 74% were in favor of spraying - 13% were not.
I agree with the city...
Back to page topI agree with the city spraying, but the poll didn't offer the choice of "spraying when necessary". These past two years have been particularly dry and we were paying for a lot of unnesessary spraying. The city should budget for prevention and spray only if the mosquito population justifies it. What is it that they are spraying, anyway? The fogging truck has a striking resemblance videos of people being dosed with cancer causing agents in the '60s.
Why not spend some more...
Back to page topWhy not spend some more money on another Round-A-Bout? This is what Hutchinson needs, d**n the mosquitoes, on with progress! Mr. Emons should also have something to say about this as he has been affected by the virus and it is a public health/safey issue at this point and should be delt with accordingly and swiftly!
DITTO!! We NEED spraying....
Back to page topDITTO!! We NEED spraying. In the 10 years we have lived in this town it is only the last few when the spraying began that we could use our back yard, day or evening. The mosquitoes could carry you away!!
We don't have many months of summer we need to maximize them.
