This past year the McLeod County Corn & Soybean Growers Association and the University of Minnesota Extension in McLeod County teamed up for the McLeod County Corn and Soybean Growers Plots. The corn plot was located east of Lake Marion on the Dean Zimmerman farm and the soybean plot was located northeast of Hutchinson on the Emil Starke farm. The growing season presented many challenges to area farmers due to drought at times as well as excessive rain at others.
The McLeod County Corn Plot had a total of eleven entries and the bushel per acre average for this year was 181 bushels. The bushel median for this year was 182 bushels and the yield ranged from the highest yield of 194 bushels to the lowest 161 bushels. The McLeod County Corn Plot winner was Croplan Genetics 421VT3.
The McLeod County Soybean Plot had a total of nine entries and the bushel average for this year was 45 bushels per acre. The bushel median for this year was 46 bushels and the yield ranged from the highest yield of 48 bushels to the lowest 39 bushels. The McLeod County Soybean Plot winner was Golden Harvest Seeds H-1852RR.
Copies of the McLeod County Corn & Soybean Plot can be obtained at the McLeod County Extension Office at the fairgrounds in Hutchinson. The internet option for corn is to go online to the MN Corn Growers Website at www.mncorn.org or find the McLeod County Extension Website and look under publications at www.extension.umn.edu.
