Mentors offer lifelong friendship

Filed under:

There are two boys in McLeod County waiting to be mentored through Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities, a program that matches a child with an adult, volunteer mentor who provides friendship and support to the child.

Little Brother No. 1 is an active 13-year-old who lives in Hutchinson. He likes playing soccer, riding bicycle, swimming, camping and hiking. He also loves being outdoors. This creative and friendly boy is looking for a mentor who shares his interests.

Little Brother No. 2 lives in Glencoe. This 13-year-old is intelligent and has a good sense of humor. He enjoys crafts, cars, writing and outdoor activities. He tends to be shy until he gets to know someone. His ideal Big Brother would be someone who will try new things with him.

“Mentoring a young person is one of the most rewarding things that we can do to make our communities stronger by giving our kids positive reinforcement and helping them grow into strong, healthy, engaged citizens,” Marketing and Public Relations Associate Michelle Abel said. “Through their friendship, mentors help young people develop self-esteem, honesty and responsibility. When you listen to Bigs (mentors) talk about their experiences it is clear that mentoring has a positive impact on everyone involved in our program. They talk to us about how their Little (young person) has changed the way they look at the world,” she said.

Anyone interested in mentoring either of the two boys mentioned above can apply online at www.bigstwincities.org, or by calling Big Brothers Big Sisters at (651) 789-2400.
