Paintball is pretty much the only legal way good friends can run around shooting each other.
Starting in early July, McLeod County will offer a new venue for the sport. Area 22 Paintball will be just south of Lace Avenue on State Highway 22, southeast of Biscay.
The 12.5-acre field will be partially wooded. Eventually, it will feature structures and obstacles such as small houses and barricades. Owner Tony Wagner said he will offer gear and paintball guns for rent. Paintball fans can also bring their own equipment.
Wagner said he’ll base the design of his field on SC Village, a 100-acre paintball park in California. SC Village has themed playing courses.
Hobby becomes business
“About two years ago I decided to start a paintball field,” Wagner said. “I was working at 3M as a quality specialist.”
Wagner was ready to try something different. “I just kind of took one of my hobbies and did some market research.”
He’d already done about 15 years worth of field research as a diehard fan. Wagner started playing paintball during his college days at the University of Minnesota. As he later traveled around the country, he continued to indulge in a good splatfest.
“I’ve tried to take the best of everything I’ve played and put it into my deal,” he said.
Running the field will be a full-time job for Wagner, who’s also helped his wife, Mary Jo, run a custom drapery and window treatment business.
Wagner, a certified field operator and tournament referee, hopes to start leagues and competitions later this year.
“I’ve just got to get them out there so they can see how much fun it is to play,” he said.
Admission will cost $15 for people with their own equipment. A rental package including a safety mask, paintball gun, 100 rounds of paint and all-day free air refills will cost $25.
Local paintball history
It’s possible Wagner will get a lot of rental business from Hutchinson residents.
Mike Campa, owner of the U.S. Paintball Club north of Brownton, said Hutchinson has banned the purchase, possession or transportation of paintball guns, within city limits, since the mid ’80s.
Campa tried to have the ordinance changed to only limit paintball gun ownership of people ages 20 and younger, but has since given up the fight.
“I’ve found that people tend to think they’re just a toy, but they can be dangerous,” he said.
Campa rents equipment, guns and 500 rounds for $30. There’s no additional fee to play at either his eight-acre or 40-acre field. But, people who own their own equipment are charged $25. He also can take the equipment on the road, he said, “if people want to have a birthday party at their own farm.

Paintball!! I see that...
Back to page topPaintball!! I see that someone else has opened a real field for people to play this fun sport. I was happy to see this article in the paper this week. It really is fun and exciting and promotes good exercise. It is really no different than laser tag or chasing around with squirt guns for those that think "shooting" someone is a bad influence for everyone. I think that we all grew up playing cops and robbers, or army, or something like that with cap guns and we turned out just fine. Anyway, I will be sure to be on the field this summer, when I can get a few others together to have some fun. I have played a few times in the woods outside of Hutchinson and had a great time, it is really challenging and physically exhausting at times. Anyone looking for extra players can give me a call.

Back to page topScott --
Some people tried to give their boys barbie dolls. (and the boys promptly turned them into guns). I'm female and even I didn't play with dolls, though I didn't get into guns and hunting until I was a preteen. I guess that made me a tomboy...
I hope said paintball field has woods, it's just much more fun that way than with man-made obstacles.
I'd do more of it if I could go somewhere with a couple of friends or family members and our own equipment. It's very therapeutic! heh heh.
Scott -- but Campa is right...
Back to page topScott -- but Campa is right -- they aren't toys and can be dangerous, and in that way it is different that playing cops and robbers or squirting each other with squirt guns.
The people that think you shouldn't play anything resembling war or play violence are many times the same people who don't seem to believe in anything worth fighting for and are trying very hard to feminize American society.
Very well said. I didn't...
Back to page topVery well said. I didn't mean to make it sound like they were toys. I own 2 myself and they are off limits to my kids until they are old enough to be responsible or if I am standing right next to them for target practice. I hope to see you out there..
There is an interesting...
Back to page topThere is an interesting debate brewing in Minneapolis over a proposal to ban public possession of paintball guns that are designed to be replicas of real guns.
I wonder if something like that would ever pass in Hutchinson. You can read more about the proposed ban at a post on this paintball blog.
It has been illegal for...
Back to page topIt has been illegal for several years to have a splat (paintball) gun inside Hutchinson city limits. From time to time there have been outbreaks of vandalism using the guns to damage houses and cars. Below is the city ordinance pertaining to firearms.

Wow. That seems pretty...
Back to page topWow. That seems pretty rigid.
The Hutchinson law appears to penalize honest citizens who want to play paintball within the city limits. This blog questions whether people in Hutchinson should have a right to buy paintball guns.
