Bavarian Haus closing Jan. 3

» Read similar stories filed under:

The Bavarian Haus, 36 Main St. N., will serve its last spaetzle, rouladen, wiener schnitzel, sauerkraut, Black Forest cake, lager, wine and other German favorites on Saturday, Jan. 3.

Owners Doris and Durwood “Woody” Lamprecht said the last three or four weeks have sealed the restaurant’s fate, causing them “to make the tough decision to close for good.” Changing dining habits over the years, perhaps accelerated by the current economic recession, were among the factors they cited.

The Bavarian Haus opened in April 1992 as a German coffee and gift shop. At the time, both Lamprechts were working full time at 3M. Doris, a native of German, originally offered prepackaged German and other European foods, as well as pastries to go with the coffee. It evolved into a restaurant with Doris cooking her German specialties.

“We did have many good years,” Woody said Monday. “We met many good customers who have become friends of ours’. We have truly appreciated all of you who have patronized us during our years of operations. We will miss you.”

Doris and Woody, sorry to see you go. You have been a wonderful addition to Hutchinson. I believe outsiders valued and supported you more than our resident population and I hope you don't hold that against us. Just, Thank you for all your efforts. You will be missed.

I write something that says sorry to hear you are closing and talked about how the residents in this town do not support any businesses here. They go out of town for all their eating and shopping needs. The surrounding towns are the ones who support our local businesses. Thats basically it, then what happens? The Hutchinson leader pulls it off this page. Sorry about speaking the truth about this town.

As a patron of the Bavarian Haus for a few years, I have to say I've really enjoyed their food. However, as stated in this article, they have been the only game in town for a nice "sit down" meal.

With Zella's coming in, I'm sure that Zella's has been pulling away potential customers and that the "last three or four weeks" of slow times have been due to the recession AND to Zella's.

I think the Bavarian Haus has struggled over the past year or so to deliver the best experience while managing costs. With new competition and a tough economy, I cannot say I'm surprised to hear the news.

We will miss you Woody and Doris.
