Zella's offers upscale comfort food with a touch of elegance

» Read similar stories filed under:

Whether it is raspberry pan chicken or grilled French double-pork chops, Zella’s Restaurant, the newest dining establishment in downtown Hutchinson, has a goal of creating a memorable experience for diners.

Doing business under the general philosophy of “specializing in chef-driven eclectic comfort food in a warm and elegant bistro atmosphere,” Zella’s owners Tiffany Haag and Blake Barnard believe Hutchinson area diners will like what they offer.

Haag and Barnard met while working at separate restaurants in the Twin Cities. Haag and Zella’s executive chef, 21-year-old Joe Foster, worked together. Foster’s fiancee, Jennifer Davis, is Zella’s pastry chef. Foster attended the Art Institute’s chef program.

“Joe had been accepted to an exclusive program in Rhode Island, but turned it down to come here,” Haag said. She and Barnard believe Foster has created a menu with something for everyone’s tastes and see to it that it is served in a memorable manner by attentive, courteous staff.

“What we are really proud to be is a place where people can get chef-driven quality food form a real chef making real things from real ingredients.” Haag said. “It has really come together. I think Joe has really come through for us. Our mission is integrity, and that starts with what you serve.”

Zella’s is named after Tiffany’s maternal grandmother, Rosella Stearns, who died in June 2007. She encouraged her granddaughter to pursue her dream.

I was not impressed with Zella's at all. I went in on a weekend right before the dinner crowd would come in. I was told 15-20 minutes before we could be sat, no problem, we'll have a beer while we wait. Kinda weird to have to wait for a table when the place only had a few tables eating. Sat and waited, 40 minutes comes around, no one comes up to me, still empty tables, so I go to the host and ask how much longer, well 15-20 minutes longer, we save tables for reservation only. You should have said that when I walked in. This place is for the high end, dresses, ties, Bentlys, Caddies, BMW's, and so on. If you don't look or act rich, don't bother. A group in sweat pants and sweat shirts did not even get acknowledged the night I waited for a table. Pick up on your customer service and treat everyone with repect. Everyone can afford to eat out, don't push the jean, sweat pants crowd away.

I talked to someone who called to make reservations. They weren't open yet but the answering machine told them to leave a name and what time they needed a reservation. This person didn't receive a call back by 2 pm so they called back and asked if they had a reservation. The employee seemed annoyed by this and told this person that they were going through the reservations. When this person asked when they might know, the employee responded, "I told you, they are going through the reservations right now." It turns out they never got a reservation. How is someone supposed to make plans for a group of people if you don't know if you can even go or not. They decided to go and wait for an opening anyways. I refused to go with because I do not appreciate the way staff had handled things nor will I ever go there until they change their practices. Now is the time to get people in there because once the newness wears off, it'll be back to apple bees for most people.

If Hutch truly wants a higher-end food experience perhaps think about leaving the sweatpants at home. No need for a tie... just a pair of chinos and a button shirt with a collar would be nice enough. As far as Zellas.... nice lighting and nice mood... but tables on top of eat other. Food was ok... some of it was a bit burnt... Will be interesting to see if people will continue to pay $80.00 dollars for a dinner for two and a couple of drinks in March when the newness is worn off.
