Old home brought down

» Read similar stories filed under:

An elegant residential landmark at the intersection of Second Avenue Southwest and Franklin Street South came tumbling down Wednesday morning with help from a backhoe.

A multi-car garage next to the home was also demolished. Owner Dave Norem said he sold the property to neighboring Citizens Bank and Trust Co., which will use the land for green space.

Norem said he wanted to save the home and move it, but permit and moving costs for the tall home were prohibitive.

For many years the home, built in 1929, was a single-family residence, and later was divided into three apartments. It had a lot of space and was well-built, Norem said.

“It breaks my heart to see it come down,” he said.

For photos of the home before and after the demolition, see the Leader's Thursday, Sept. 25 print edition.
