Local hero's story featured on 'Crisis Point'

A local deputy’s heroism will be recounted Sunday night on the cable series “Crisis Point.” The episode airs 9 p.m., June 29, on TruTV (channel 103 on Hutchinson Telephone Co.’s cable service).

On June 18, 2007, McLeod County Sheriff’s Deputy Jennifer Mueller was dragged for about 20 to 25 feet on Highway 212, east of Stewart, by an escaping suspect’s vehicle. Mueller had stopped Jerry Dean Burt, of Olivia, after he earlier left the scene of a domestic assault.

Mueller tried to stop Burt from speeding away, but her arm was trapped in the door of his GMC Suburban. She fell to the pavement, striking her head, then jumped in her squad car to join pursuit with other officers who had just arrived.

Burt was captured after a high-speed chase. He was later convicted of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle and domestic assault. He is serving a sentence at the state prison in Faribault and is expected to be released this October.

Mueller later received a Meritorious Service Award for courage, dedication and devotion to duty without regard for her personal safety. Deputies Paul Schermann, Brian Stiles and Sgt. Jayson Boraas helped Mueller pursue and arrest Burt. They received letters of recognition for outstanding teamwork and professionalism.

Sunday night’s episode of “Crisis Point” will include a re-enactment of the event. Earlier this year, Mueller taped an interview for TruTV (formerly Court TV) and served as a technical advisor for the segment. A stuntwoman played Mueller for the dragging re-enactment.

I'm bummed, I watched the whole show and Deputy Meuller's story was not on. Did she get snubbed or was the date/time in the Leader a mistake?

Justme, I will look into that. I was going by the information I received from TruTV's spokesperson.

Justme, I did send an e-mail to a TruTV spokesperson a couple weeks ago. I bugged 'em again Saturday and got a reply this morning. The spokesperson apologized for the late reply and wrote "Deputy Mueller’s episode aired last night, 7/13, instead. There was a last minute schedule change that we weren’t aware of, and we’re just getting everything sorted out now. I will find out if it’s re-airing anytime soon, and let you know."

So, there you go. If the episode runs again, and I find out about it in advance ;-), I'll put the word out.

I saw it last night. I wasn't impressed with that show. It seemed that most of the situations could have been avoided and almost seemed that the people on the show had made mistakes. I watch 'Cops' a lot, and I have yet to see an episode where they tell someone they are under arrest while they are inside the vehicle. There was another incident where an officer was at his desk which was in the corner of the room. He turned away from the supect and got punched. The show has lots of examples of what not to do. I'm not an expert on law enforcement so go ahead and rip me apart for feeling this way.
