FeatureSpring time yard tips from Master Gardener Chris SchlueterMay 13, 2008 - 10:16am — Kay JohnsonSpring is here, time to check out your yard! This is the time of year to evaluate what winter damage has been done. Check all of your shrubs and perennials. Some plants may look dead, but give them time to rejuvenate with the warmer temperatures coming. Some are slow to come around after a long winter’s nap. Birthright finds new home at Hope CenterMay 13, 2008 - 10:12am — Kay Johnson
Birthright open house When Birthright of Hutchinson was established in 1981, no one expected that the first call would come from a 16-year-old boy who thought his girlfriend was pregnant. State veterans group honors Hutchinson ManMay 13, 2008 - 7:10am — Terry DavisVan Karg has attended numerous state conventions in his 24 years as a member of the Disabled American Veterans, but he was caught off guard at this year’s gathering in Rochester May 2. That was when he was named the state Adjutant of the Year. In the DAV, an adjutant is a chapter’s secretary and treasurer, charged with keeping meeting minutes as well as correspondence between chapters, members and with the department. Dostals join Sesquicentennial Wagon TrainMay 8, 2008 - 8:07am — Terry DavisOn command, Prancer and Shuba step forward in well-practiced unison until a firm “whoa” brings them to a halt. Another single command sends them stepping backward to their original starting point. Standing 15 feet away, owner Jim Dostal watches with pride as his 22-year-old draft horses complete the task. He isn’t even in the seat, or at the reins, of the manure spreader they are hitched to at his Hutchinson Township farm. Jim and Marlene Dostal will dress for the part when they ride this weekend in the Minnesota State Sesquicentennial Wagon Train to the State Capitol in St. Paul. Their covered wagon will be drawn by their draft horses, Prancer and Shuba. For the complete story, see the May 8 print edition of the Hutchinson Leader.
Going for the green: fundraising is in the works for Gopher Campfire Wildlife SanctuaryMay 6, 2008 - 11:03am — Kay JohnsonBig changes are coming to the Gopher Campfire Wildlife Sanctuary in Hutchinson. Working together, the city, Gopher Campfire and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources have developed a plan that calls for raising $166,000 to stabilize the pond banks, tree plantings, water control structures, visitor seating, signage, a new eight-foot security fence, prairie restoration, an interpretative building and refurbishment of existing structures. From left, Kathy Nowak and Becky Felling have worked together at McLeod County Public Health since the early 1980s. Felling retired as the department’s director this week and believes her successor, Nowak, will be an excellent leader. For the complete story, see the May 1 print edition of the Hutchinson Leader.
April 26, 2008 - 4:00am "Singers, Indians, Stockade" is the title given to the mural at the Hutchinson Post Office. It was painted in 1942 by Minnesota artist Elsa Jemne. If you’re standing at the counter in the Post Office, just look up and you will see moments in Hutchinson history: the Singing Hutchinson Brothers, the stockade and the burning of Pendergast school during the Dakota-U.S. War of 1862. For information on more murals around Hutchinson, see the April 24 print edition of the Hutchinson Leader.
Former McLeod County chief deputy appointed police chief in NorthfieldApril 25, 2008 - 2:27pm — Jorge SosaFormer McLeod County Chief Deputy Mark Taylor is taking the reins in Northfield. Taylor was appointed police chief for the city of approximately 19,000 earlier this week. Ironically, one of his duties later this year will include ensuring an attempted bank robbery goes smoothly and safely. Northfield is home to the annual Defeat of Jesse James Days celebration, in which the James-Younger gang’s failed raid of the First National Bank is re-enacted several times. The festival is a big draw, Taylor said. “It’s a really fun event for families and people to come in and see.” Hutchinson's 40-year MIA to be remembered SundayApril 17, 2008 - 3:56am — Terry DavisOutside, it was a sunny fall day. Inside the farmhouse’s living room, a large cluster of television cameras and newspaper reporters captured the disappointment on the faces of the Lyle Mackedanz family as an Army sergeant told them photos they thought pictured their long-missing son was really another man. It was Sept. 26, 1985. |
