Are home's turrets too high? Neighbors seek city code enforcement

» Read similar stories filed under:

A group of Lewis Avenue Southwest neighbors will appear before the Hutchinson City Council next week to appeal what they see as a lack of code and zoning enforcement by the city’s Planning, Zoning and Building Department.

A hearing before the council has been scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the council chamber of City Center, 111 Hassan St. S.E. Under city code, the council serves as an appellate board to review decisions made by the Planning Department.

The neighbors are hoping the rarely used grievance process finally gets city action against a home at 1209 Lewis Ave. S.W. owned by Cindy and Steve Wadsworth. Neighbors believe additions to the home, especially some tall turrets, violate ordinances, including a 25-foot height restriction on structures in the shoreland district. The cul-de-sac, and the Wadsworths’ home, border the Crow River, just west of the School Road bridge.

In a letter to the council last month, neighbors claim the turrets exceed the 25-foot limit, that city staff recognizes that, but has failed to require compliance through lowering or removing the turrets. Instead, neighbors claim city staff told the owners to move in fill to raise the base ground level, thus circumventing the ordinance.

I heard from a very reliable source that the county is going to buy the house and put level three sex offenders in it. The turrets can be used to keep a watchful eye if any of them try to escape.

Correct as usual macaca. I noticed another house in the neighborhood has a turret. No doubt they are one of the neighbor's doing the whining. It sounds like a neighborhood "their turret's bigger than my turret" crying session. I think that's pretty common, especially in an area they think is a "shoreline district". Shoreline district? There's no shore on the Crow River. Lake Minnetonka has a shoreline district. The Crow River is a shoreline district wanna-be. Lighten up people.

It seems to me that this is a group of neighbors that are intent on being jerks to each other. I think it is fairly funny looking on from the outside as they probably all deserve each other knowing who all the involved parties are. As far as the Crow river having a shoreline district, I think the district is defined as to the proximity to water, not how attractive the actual shoreline is as implied my Uncle Ted.

Ya, I get the shoreline bit, dawg. It was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. The Crow River's not exactly Lake Minnetonka. I'm just sayin'. I guess I should leave the humor to Slingblade and tms. Unlike you, I don't know anyone in that hood but it doesn't sound like I'm missin' out on much. As someone who passes by on the way to work, I'd say the neighbors are big on wine and cheese (hold the cheese). Right neighborly folks, don't ya think?

Perhaps even more than the turrets in question, neighbors last week told the council that perhaps their greatest concern is that construction on the unfinished house has stretched on for as much as 4 1/2 years with long periods of no work taking place. With it has come construction materials blowing around the neighborhood, a dumpster in the driveway much of the time, the door to the house left open and the cul-de-sac becoming something of a tourist attraction with gawkers driving into it to take a look.

You know the economy is bad.People fall on bad times. There could of been a variety of reasons as to why this was not completed. But to me it sounds like there are some stuck snobby neighbores these poor people ahve to put up with.

Justlisahere - I find it funny that in another post you complain of drivers not obeying traffic laws, but then you make this post sympathizing with a homeowner who obviously disobeyed height restrictions. I also don't understand how you can assume the neighbors are snobs for simply standing up for their rights. I believe most people would grow tired of a 4 year construction job next door that could negatively affect already decreasing home values.
