Crowded city council field headed toward September primary

Six more residents headed to Hutchinson City Center Tuesday to file candidates for City Council seats up for election this fall. That brings to an even dozen the number of people who will seek office.

That means there will be a primary election for the two council seats on Sept. 9, unless some candidates withdraw by 5 p.m. Thursday, July 17.

Incumbent Mayor Steve Cook remains unchallenged as he seeks a third two-year term. He has backed off somewhat from earlier comments that this could be his last term. He indicated Wednesday morning his decision could ultimately depend on what direction the new council takes on such issues as policy governance.

"Will it be my last? I don't know," he said. "It depends upon what happens."

There are plenty of candidates for both Council Seat 3 and 4, where incumbents Kay Peterson and Casey Stotts did not seek re-election.

The latest resident to file for Peterson's Seat 3 are Brad Jacobsen, 525 Lynn Road S.W. and Eric Yost, 440 Campbell Lane N.W. They join Mary Christensen, 528 Juul Road S.W., and Steven Sherman, 15 Academy Lane N.W. in a four-way race.

A whopping seven candidates tossed their hats into the contest for Stotts' Seat 4. Those filing Tuesday for that position were Mark Cormier, 755 Madson Ave. S.W., Chad Czmowski, 547 School Road N.W., LaVonne Hansen, 1125 West Shore Drive S.W., and Roger Stearns, 720 Park Island Drive S.W. They join Raymond Norton, 1245 Roberts Road S.W., Susan Noyes, 3 Northwoods Ave. N.E., and Timothy Sepulvado, 695 California St. N.W.

Because there are at least three candidates for each council seat, a primary election will take place Sept. 9. The general election is Nov. 4.

Back to page top

The seats don't represent any specific area of town, such as a "ward" system would. They are all "at-large." Prior to being elected mayor, Cook was instrumental in getting the charter changed to run for specific seats. Previously, it was a free-for-all in which the top two vote getters won the two positions. The idea behind filing for a specific seat was that it allows you as a challenger, if an incumbent is running, to target the incumbent you'd like to see removed from office while not necessarily knocking off the other incumbent you might like in office.

I'm not sure what strategy, if any, is behind so many going for Seat 4 unless they feel the field is weaker, or there is someone they specifically want to defeat so that person doesn't gain office. It would seem easier to campaign in a four-person race than a seven-person race, though the seven-person race could potentially divide the votes so much that it takes fewer votes to win.

Seat 3 doesn't have a cushion and seat 4 leans back and comes with a foot stool. Seat 3 does go up but doesn't go back down.

Fortunately for us, we were appointed — not elected — to our spots on "Six Minutes Over Hutchinson." And I would say you've already achieved a certain amount of local fame through your unique brand of online wisecrackery. Is "wisecrackery" even a word? It is now.

Back to page top

I am running for seat #3 because I want to fight and vote on the city council for lower property taxes and limited city projects. In these economic hard times we need tax relief and limited city projects. I think it is great that 11 people are going for the two open seats on city council. We should have a good public discussion and campaign for the Sept. 9 primary and Nov. 4 general election. Should be a good couple of weeks for politics in Hutchinson. Steve Sherman
