Girls learn to sing, dance — and smile!
June 19, 2008 - 9:29am — Lesley Christianson
For many little girls, learning how to sing and dance — and getting to show off those new skills to Mom and Dad — is a good reason to get up early in the summer. All week, Hutchinson High School Choir Director Jim Nelson, along with junior Kelsey Knutson, are teaching 10 area girls in the Community Education program Show Choir Camp. The practices will pay off during a performance for parents and guests 10 a.m. Friday. “We mostly learn how to sing and dance and smile,” Nelson said of his young pupils. Knutson has been through the gamut of dance and choir activities available in Hutchinson and brings that experience to the choreography table. She’s also been through the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre camp. “I’ve been in dance since I was 4,” she said. “I love it. It’s so much fun.” The camp is open to first- through sixth-grade students and is sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. This is Knutson’s second year teaching the dance portion of the camp. “We try to keep it pretty simple,” she said. “And they’re doing so well.” For the full story, check out the Thursday, June 19 print edition of the Leader. (Lesley Christianson is a staff writer for the Hutchinson Leader.)
