Icelandic educators visit local charter schools

Where do Icelandic educators go to learn about innovative ways to provide education? This past Tuesday, a group of them came to Hutchinson to New Century and New Discoveries Montessori Academy charter schools to learn more about the alternative public education in Minnesota — and they brought their mayor.

“I came because I control the money, so if they want to make any changes, they have to go through me,” Unnur Konradsdottir said laughing.

Konradsdottir is mayor of the small community of Rangarthing eystra, Iceland, where the local principal and vice principal decided to bring 25 members of their staff to Minnesota to learn about the state’s charter school system. Iceland is in the process of reforming its educational process and Minnesota seemed a logical place for them to gain insight on new and effective ways of delivery an education.

“They chose Minnesota because Minnesota has always been a leader in education,” New Century Education Director Allen Hoffman said. “This whole day is dedicated to them immersing themselves in our schools.”

The group will visit several other charter schools in the state, including Prairie Creek Community School, Northfield School of Arts and Technology and Cross Winds East Metro Charter School.

Hoffman said the day’s visit may not be the last time New Century students have the chance to visit with the Icelandic educators.
“Some of us are already scheming about an E-term trip to Iceland next fall and they’re very willing to work with us on that,” he said.
