Cheer squad seeks new coach

Filed under:

Hutchinson High School athletics have been without a cheerleading squad for the past few weeks.

The team has been temporarily disbanded following the resignation of its coach, Pamela Vilchis, before the homecoming game Friday, Sept. 28. Activities Director Paul Szymanski said a team or group activity cannot remain intact without an official advisor or coach. The school is actively seeking a replacement so the squad can return to the fields and courts.

Parents of cheerleaders said they met with Vilchis before her resignation, and disagreed with her over team expectations. Vilchis could not be reached for comments.

I don’t think deleting the whole thread was necessary, but if you insist than I would like to just say this. (Deserting children that look to you for guidance is sick and twisted!!!!!)

I normally do not respond to online posts however, I do find them rather interesting to read here and there. In an earlier post I read an opinion stating that Cheerleading is not a sport and I actually found that to be rather insulting as a former Cheerleader. I believe that there are two types of people that would make such a statement . . . a individual that never made a squad or a person that couldn't ever get a date from one. It would be nice to know both sides of the story but in the end it doesn't sound like there are any winners here. Someone has to pay for the mistakes of a few and as it seems right now it is the kids.

I would really like to hear Pam Vilchis side of the story before judging her actions. We knew her several years ago when my children were students in Hutchinson and she struck me as a lovely lady who really cared about her pupils. Sick and twisted would not be words I would choose to describe her. I can't help but think she had to have a VERY good reason to walk away, and I am sure she didn't make that decision lightly.

sounds fishy to me. i find it hard to believe that someone would walk out on a group of kids like that without due cause. jinkies, shaggy, i bet there's more to this mystery.

It would apear that you did not attend and help support the game that you are bragging about. The cheerleaders were there and were as a squad. Even though the faculty of the school does not recognize them, the team and fans do. It is evedent that we can NOT count on facts from you and I would appreciate it if you would refrain from the attacks on the squad.

NYAchick As I said before, it is to bad the whole thread had to be deleeted I gave all the facts and no one could prove otherwise I will see what I can do to post them again.

i can understand why a coach would walk out on a meeting if any of the parents are similar to TandT.

Back to page top

I had written a comment that has since been deleted along with all of the other ones. I had stated that I didn't know why the coach had resigned but I thought it was terrible that there were no cheerleaders cheering for the football game on October 5th. I also had said that I hoped they would find a new coach so that these girls could continue to cheer at games.
My son is a Senior and plays football for the Hutchinson Tigers and I have always enjoyed having the cheerleaders help get the crowd excited. When the crowd gets excited, it helps the players stay pumped. I wasn't at the game last night but I was at the Shakopee game and did see that the girls were there as a team, just not in uniform. With the playoffs starting this Tuesday, it would be really nice if we could have the cheerleaders able to dress and cheer the boys on. Instead of trying to find blame, I hope someone finds a way to work everything out.
I also hope that this thread does not go into name calling and degrading people - that doesn't solve anything. Lets all be nice. Shellie Shufelt

TandT, if you are going to post 'the facts' make sure those facts include both sides of the story and what the meeting was about. Stating there was a meeting and the coach walked out isn't giving the facts, that's just one detail.

Back to page top

I would be interested in all the facts and not a partial story. If the coach indeed walked out because parents and cheerleaders did not agree on the coaches expectations of the team I would like to know what the expectations were in the first place. I believe that goals and expectations should be set high for all individuals regardless of the sport that they are participating in as their actions highly influence the younger kids and these athletes are being looked up to by many. Anything less is not acceptable. Maybe that is something we don't understand until we are older and wiser but none the less sports in general give kids something to look forward to, something to do, something to work hard for, something to teach them about being a team, something to strive for, potential scolorships and something to be proud of! I do not know any of the individauls that are involved and affected by the situation nor am I from the Hutchinson community BUT if I knew the whole story I might be willing to help out as a stand in coach until a permanent one can be found. I was a former cheerleader and coach but as a coach I found it difficult to balance work, home and coaching all at once but might be willing to do it through the remainder of the season. Just rambling
