Players and coaches just shrugged their shoulders Wednesday when the Tigers softball team found out its fate for the Section 2AAA playoffs, which begin today at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
Hutchinson (8-11) was given the No. 10 seed in the 12-team section. Coaches were hoping to be eight or nine, ahead of Minnetonka and Chaska, who each have only five wins.
Despite the seeding, the team plans to move on and face whoever tests them.
Last year, Hutchinson was forced to play a first-round game with the eventual state runner-up Chaska squad.
For more than five innings, the Tigers gave the Hawks and star pitcher Brynne Dordel all they could handle. Chaska didn’t score until the sixth inning — plating five unearned runs with two outs.
That game has seniors Lynn Wegner and Sarah Gensmer confident that this year’s team can play with anybody.
Even top seed Mankato West (18-1) or Missota Conference champion Prior Lake, who outscored the Tigers 23-3 this season.
“When we came into the Chaska game we thought they’d demolish us. They had a really good record. But we learned something in that game. We can play with good teams and I think that experience will help us out this year,” Wegner said.
“We really had nothing to lose in that Chaska game. We went out and made the plays and got good pitching and we really showed them that they couldn’t overlook us,” Gensmer said. “That’s what we want to do this year.”

Back to page topHutchinson was given the 10th seed because of a below average record and a history of producing poor teams. Why were the coaches shrugging their shoulders... they win 8 games and they expect the Crow river to part and allow them to walk in it's path? I will agree that winning 8 games is better than usual for this program. Good luck in the tourney... maybe you can prove them all wrong!

Back to page topIn this situation I'd rather be ranked 10th than 8 or 9. The winner of the 8/9 game plays 1 and the winner of 7/10 plays 2.

Hutchinson won the first game, but ran into the Missota Conference champions - losing 8-0 to Prior Lake.
The 10 seed wasn't a terrible draw - just not what they expected. But like I wrote - they'll deal with it.
Hutch plays Thursday in the losers' bracket.

Back to page topBeating Buffalo is enough?? Enough for what, a 9 - 12 record. Beating a 7th seed is hardly reason to celebrate. But if there is going to be a parade, I'm going to curbside tonight to mark my place with my black and gold blanket!

Back to page topThe whole point of your first comment was to say that Hutchinson should expect to be the seed they are - I was saying we deserved to be higher.
A 10 beating a 7 that bad clearly means that the seeds were wrong and Hutch should have been higher. I'm not saying anything more than that - Hutch deserved to be No. 7. But, it really didn't matter. They won and they are still alive in the playoffs.

Back to page topTake a close look at the records of the seeds 1 through 9. Many of them have lost games... several games in fact. Hutchinson beat Buffalo, yippee. you know as i do that there isn't much difference in a 7th and a 10th seeded team. Because we beat them doesn't mean they did not earn their original seeding. Hutchinson has not produced a winner in decades... as a result they do not have the respect of the other coaches who do the voting. It wasn't a screw-job against the poor Tigers, just simply math, past history, and some common sense that earned them a 10th seed. Lets see them knock off a one, two, or three seed before we start to create another Hall of Fame category.
