If there was any doubt whether Hutchinson sophomore Audrey Kumm is the favorite to win the Class A 200 individual medley race this fall, that doubt was lifted with a pool-record swim Saturday in the Hutchinson Invitational.
Kumm’s pool-record time of 2:10.11 was six-tenths faster than her second-place time in the state meet last season. Her nearest competitor Saturday was 13 seconds behind her.
If that wasn’t enough, Kumm swam her fastest time ever in the 100 butterfly event later in the meet, posting a time of 58.64. The first-place swim was six-tenths below her third-place time at state last year.
Tigersharks coach Rory Fairbanks, who spent days working on updating the pool and varsity record board on the west wall of the pool, will have to get back up on the ladder again.
“I told her thanks. Now I have to redo the board,” he said. “She may have been a bit tapered from the state meet with the club team this summer. Still, she swam great.”
The Tigersharks won the event with 602 1/2 points with Marshall finishing a distant second with 364 points.
Hutchinson hosts Northfield in the dual opener at 6 p.m. Thursday.
