Shufelt sweeps sprint events at Fairmont

Filed under:

Missota Conference — be aware! Cory Shufelt is back.

The senior sprinter swept all three sprinting events at the Fairmont Sentinel Relays Friday, posting season-best times in the 100- and 200-meter dashes to help Hutchinson to a second-place finish.

The host team won both the boys’ and girls’ competitions with the Tigers placing second of four teams.
Shufelt, who began the season nursing a groin injury, looked to be back in state title form by winning the 100 in a blazing 10.9 seconds.

The time is fourth-best in the state this season. His time of 22.2 in the 200 meters was also fourth-best in the state as his time of 50.06 in the 400 meters.

Shufelt and the Tigers will be running in the conference meet today and Thursday at Prior Lake. The meet begins each day at 3:45 p.m.

Also winning events for the Tiger boys’ were Kyle Schmidt, a double-winner in the 1,600 and the 3,200; and Blake Bordson in the long jump. The sophomore also posted a career-best time of 16.1 for second place in the 110 hurdles.

Torin Jones had a career-best jump of 11-9 in the pole vault, while Brady Mickolichek was third in both the discus and shot put.

In the girls’ competition, freshman Kelci Viesselman showed that her throw of 113 feet from the week before was for real.

She won the discus event with a distance of 108-5. Her season-best is just outside of the top 20 in state this season.

Alissa Retterath was the team’s other champion, winning the 1,600-meter run in a time of 5:26.
