1. Shakopee (Record: 22-2 Section: 6-0)
* Outside of Class 3A No. 2 ranked Lakeville North, the No. 1 ranked Sabers have been unstoppable this season, winning 22 matches a season after winning the state title. Despite graduating hitter Maggie Geske and setter Jessica Menden, Shakopee still has gotten in done with big wins over Eastview, Chaska, Eden Prairie, Jordan and Owatonna (to name a few). The Sabers finish with Waconia, Hutchinson and Farmington.
2. Chaska (Record: 14-2 Section: 4-1)
* The Hawks are ranked No. 4 in state and are almost locked in to the second seed. Chaska lost to Shakopee in a tournament final and has beaten Eden Prairie twice. Waconia does not play Chaska this season. The Hawks were back-to-back champions in 06 and 07 and could be headed toward another title if they can defeat Chaska in sections.
3. Waconia (Record: 19-2 Section: 2-0)
* Hard to argue against the No. 6 ranked Wildcats in this position - they have not beaten Chaska or Shakopee and they beat Eden Prairie 3-1 in the season opener. Add in the fact that Waconia has won 16 straight matches and it looks like Waconia will occupy this spot. The Wildcats do still play Shakopee, Dassel-Cokato and play in the Benilde-St. Margaret Tournament. Kara Dioske, who has a school-record 888 career kills, is one of the top hitters in the section outside of Ashley Wittman.
4. Eden Prairie (Record: 15-5 Section: 0-4)
* The No. 7 ranked Eagles slide into the fourth spot for one reason, well four — they have yet to beat a team ranked higher than them. Eden Prairie is 0-4 against Shakopee, Chaska and Waconia. The Eagles finish out the season with matches with Eastview, Burnsville and the Eastview Tournament. Tough finish, but I still think Prior Lake doesn't have enough big wins to top EP.
5. Prior Lake (Record: 16-7 Section: 2-2)
* Plain and simple, the Lakers beat Hutchinson 3-2 last week, so they get the nod at No. 5. Prior Lake has played a tough schedule this year, so they are a good team with 16 wins. They finish with Northfield, Minnetonka and Eastview, so 18 wins is possible. Prior Lake only has one senior - Brittni Wangrin.
6. Hutchinson (Record: 14-7 Section: 4-1)
* The Tigers were 13-3, but stumbled during a three-day stretch, going 1-4 (three of those without Laura and Sara Carlson). Honestly, the sixth seed may be the best thing for Hutchinson right now. If the top six plays out like it should, the Tigers would avoid Lake Conference teams until the semifinals. Waconia vs Hutch would be a fun match.
7. Willmar (Record: 11-8-1 Section: 1-2)
* The Cardinals have 11 wins, but could finish with 14 wins if they run the table over Sauk Rapids-Rice, Fergus Falls and St. Cloud Tech. Before losses to Alexandria and ROCORI, Willmar was contending for the Central Lakes Conference. Willmar lost to Hutchinson 3-0 earlier this season, but beat Minnetonka.
8. Minnetonka (Record: 10-11 Section: 1-3)
* Despite less wins, the Skippers get the eighth seed due to a bit tougher schedule. Still, Minnetonka has not beaten anybody. Edina (twice), Robbinsdale Armstrong, St. Francis (twice), Totino-Grace, Mounds View, St. Peter, Meadow Creek Christian and New Prague - who? I saw this team a few weeks back - not bad, but not good for that size of school either.
9. Mankato East (Record: 14-12-1 Section: 2-1)
* Yawn to the Cougars schedule, which includes weak 1A and 2A schools. Seven of their 12 wins came in small tournaments in Mankato, Litchfield and Jackson County Central. They beat Mankato West and New Prague to warrant this spot.
10. New Prague (Record: 9-15 Section: 1-7)
* The scrappy Trojans split with Mankato East, but lost seven other games to section opponents. New Prague has played in two good tournaments - Lakeville North and Farmington.
11. Mankato West (Record: 8-12-1 Section: 1-3)
* The Scarlets move up from No. 12 from 2007 to No. 11 this year. Three wins at the Park Tournament really pushed them over the top of Buffalo.
12. Buffalo (Record: 6-14 Section: 0-0)
* The Bison have no section opponents on their schedule - in the second year of the section alignment rotation - unexcusebale. You get the bottom seed for doing this. Plus they only have six wins with really no big wins (the best is 10-win St. Cloud Tech).
That's my thoughts, anyone think it should be different?
