Hutchinson girls' tennis team came up just short in a bid for the state tournament in the team competition Wednesday. Five individuals still have shots in doubles and singles competition in Section 2AA.
The doubles teams of Emily Seller and Kate Byron along with Emily Klitzke and Anna Rasmussen both advanced with one win in the south sub-section Saturday. Taylor Reiner also advanced with two wins in the singles competition.
The final portion of the Section 2AA individual tournament concludes at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Lakeville Matchpoint.
The South top-seed team of Seller and Byron defeated the team of Ahlers/Schneekloth from Marshall 6-3 and 6-1. The Tigers duo will play the fourth seed from the North in Pederson/Phillips from Eden Prairie.
The South second seed team of Klitzke and Rasmussen the team of Sorsner/Johnson from New Ulm 6-3 and 6-2. The Tigers duo will now face the third seed from the North - Orono's Annie Whiteley and Jamie Peterson. The Spartans top pairing won the section a year, advancing to the state tournament.
Peterson and Whiteley were 2-1 this season against Tigers singles players, including 2-0 Wednesday in the team competition.
Reiner, who defeated Jenny Clark of Marshall 6-1 and 6-0 and Amanda Powell of New Prague 6-2 and 6-1, will play Makenna Borg of Eden Prairie Tuesday.
Both portions of the individual tournament are single elimination in the opening round. Losers of the semifinal matches play a third-place match. The top two doubles teams and two singles players advance to next week's state tournament.
