Favorites at the fair

The Department of Natural Resources fish tank is one of my favorite things at the McLeod County Fair.

In past years, some of the fish on display have been caught in the South Fork of the Crow River. A DNR employee told me they use an electrical shocking device to stun the fish. They float to the surface, and are scooped up.

What do you like the most at the fair?

The kids loved the petting zoo best, but their second fav. was the horses. Just beautiful in halter show. We were amazed the owners were so friendly, with the stress of upcoming competition and all. Owner of "Dutchess" (black minature pony) let the girls pet her, and owner of "Axel" (draft horse) let us watch him get a bath. Really exciting! The girls were surprised during the halter show when a small young girl lead in a big, elegant American Saddle Bred that just took your breath away. LJ

I do like our fair. I think it is one of the cleanest and best run fairs that I have ever seen.

What do I like? Just about everything. I think the exhibitor center is great. It is huge and everything is all in one building. The food choices are good. The events are very good. The only thing I wish we could change is the size of the midway. One of the other fairs I attend has a pretty large midway, and seemed to be wall to wall with people. I always thought that having a large midway was a big draw for the fairs and helped them at the gate. Maybe I am wrong. Other than that, keep up the great work!

I spoke with some people who attend several county fairs around the state. There are a couple of them that stopped charging at the gate in order to increase attendance. It seems this could help in several ways. Increased attendance would seemingly increase the concession sales, ride ticket sales, etc. If the attendance increased maybe you could replace the lost revenue from the gate entrance fee's through increased exhibitor fee's. I'm not sure how exhibitors would feel about paying a higher fee but maybe it wouldn't be bad if attendance increased by 30% - 50%. I'd like to see them try it. $5 doesn't seem like a lot but if you've got a couple kids and you want to go 3 nights it adds up fast. Any other thoughts?

Corndog, the giant 1,200 pound pig, was something to see. He is six years old and has grown tusks. He didn't get up during the time I was in the barn, but snored loudly. Maybe he was dreaming about a beautiful and sloppy pig pen.

One person near me when I saw Corndog said she was going to call PETA. Another person said it very sad that a pig was allowed or forced to get so fat. And one more person said, "That is mean. Why would you do that to a pig?"
