My Madison top five

» Read similar stories filed under:

Here's a twist on the Monday Top Five. This past weekend I traveled to Madison, Wis. for a hockey series between the Gophers and the Badgers.

This is the fourth straight year friends and I have made the road trip. Here are my top three highlights:

1. Breaking up the fight - for those who listened to KFAN today, Jeff Dubay, radio host and Gopher fan, was involved in an altercation. Some guy stole his beer, he chased him down and scared him into returning it.

This all took place two feet from me, and I made sure Dubay didn't make the headlines for throwing a punch over three dollars. I sent the proof to the station and everyone seemed to get a hoot out of it.

2. Chanting M-I-N-N-E-S-O-T-A after goals one and two on Saturday night. 2-2 tie, though.

3. Wearing maroon and gold three straight days - nothing beats it.

What else happened in the world of sport? Some people I'm sure watched figure skating, and that's great. I hear there were good crowds down in St. Paul.

The NHL All-Star game was watched by three people in Hutchinson. Why do we not get Versus on our cable package? Marian Gaborik had a goal - so did everybody. The score was 8-7.

Tubby and Co. have hit the skids and appear to be NIT bound. Looks like Borton and Co. are going to be our NCAA squad this year.

Justin Morneau and Michael Cuddyer sat side by side Friday at a press conference, recipients of $104 million of commitment from Carl Pohlad’s bank account.

Morneau, the 2006 AL MVP, received the most lucrative contract in Twins history — an $80 million, six-year deal. Cuddyer got three years and $24 million.

Expect Santana to be traded this week my sources say (LaValle Neal, Star Tribune).

And finally, how about the McLovins (Timberwolves)? They should have a four-game winning streak if not for a few bad plays down the stretch at Boston. Oh well. You have to love Al Jefferson right now.
