LETTER: Again, no state money for the Luce Line State Trail

The 2008 bonding bill approved by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Tim Pawlenty on April 7 provided a record level of funding for Minnesota state parks and trails. Maintaining and enhancing our state resources is a wise decision.

What caught my eye was $15.32 million to be used for our state trail system. Every corner and area of the state was funded, including the Gitchi-Gami State Trail on the north shore, the Paul Bunyan and Heartland state trails, the Minnesota River and Casey Jones state trails in the southwest and the Root River, State Coach, Mill Town and Blufflands state trails in the southeast.

Again the Luce Line State Trail received no funding. It is about time that some funding is provided for the development of Luce Line. It is apparent that money will continue to be designated for trail development. We need leadership that helps us receive a fair share instead of always having the resources go to other areas of the state.

The benefits of trails economically are well documented. In addition, safety and health are enhanced and close-to-home recreation is available. I encourage Rep. Ron Shimanski to join with Sen. Steve Dille in working toward funding for the Luce Line.
