RACING: Sunday’s Liberty Station Hobby feature at Redwood Speedway saw Matt Speckman of Sleepy Eye lead the first 14 laps of the race with Chris Plamann of Hutchinson on his tail.
On the restart following a yellow flag, Plamann was able to move through the field and take the lead from Speckman on the 15th lap.
Tim Pessek of Hutchinson, who started in 11th place, was following Plamann around the track waiting for a moment to pass, but never got it.
Patrick Kohn of Hutchinson followed Pessek and took third place ahead of Adam Ecker of Comfrey.
Earlier in the weekend at Arlington Raceway, the Annihilator IMCA Stock car feature saw three different leaders.
Bryan Apitz of New Ulm led the first four laps with Brent Uecker of Hutchinson behind him.
On the eighth lap, Rick Mees of Eagle Lake led the race, but only for one lap, as Uecker regained it on the following lap.
For the remaining 11 laps, Uecker led the race with Mees holding onto second ahead of Tom Suess of New Ulm.
The Yellow Book Hobby B feature also saw a new car in victory lane as Justin Ide from Glencoe inherited the lead when leader Joe Pommerer of Litchfield got a flat tire.
Jenni Eriksen of Burnsville led the entire sprint race, taking the lead from her front row start and never looking back as the race went flag to flag.
Tony Norem of Hutchinson started seventh, but worked up to second passing Jason Tostenson of Gaylord.
FOOTBALL: Football captain’s practices begin Monday
The Hutchinson Tigers football team begins captain’s practices at 9 a.m. Monday, July 28 on the high school football field.
All players in grades 9-12 are invited to participate in the practices, which will be twice a day at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. and will run through Friday, Aug. 8.

TENNIS: Tennis captain’s practice begins Wednesday
The Hutchinson Tigers girls’ tennis team begins captain’s practices at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 30 on the high school tennis courts.
All players in grades 9-12 are invited to participate in the practice, which will run until 11:30 a.m.
A schedule for the rest of the practices will be determined on the first day.

HUTCH SPORTS: Tigers fall sports starts
The official start dates for the Hutchinson fall sports season were announced Tuesday. All of the fall high school sports teams will start Monday, Aug. 11.
Football will practice from 9 a.m. to noon, and 5 to 7 p.m. at the high school.
The volleyball team will practice from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. at the rec center.
All players will practice the first week at the rec center. The second week, the varsity and JV will be at the high school, while the ninth grade and B-squad teams will be at the middle school.
Ninth grade will start at 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11.
The varsity and junior varsity cross country teams will start at Oddfellows Park at 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
The girls’ tennis team will practice from 8 a.m. to noon at the high school court.
The girls’ swimming and diving team will swim from 7 to 10 a.m. for all swimmers, and from 1:30 to 4:15 p.m. for varsity only.
A time and location for the new junior varsity soccer teams will be announced as soon as it is available.
Alsleben, Krasen miss state amateur cut
Neither Ryan Alsleben or Matthew Krasen, both of Hutchinson, made the cut for day three of the Minnesota Golf Association 105th State Amateur Golf Tournament at Windsong Golf Course in Independence Monday and Tuesday.
Still around on the final day were Litchfield’s Joey Polingo (tied 21st, plus-6) and Drew Dvorak (tied 56th, plus-nine).
Alsleben, who won the Crow River Golf Club Championship individual title this past weekend, will compete in the Minnesota State Open Championships in Coon Rapids this weekend.
He will also attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open in Nebraska in the coming weeks.

FOOTBALL: Willmar Mustangs travel to Olivia Saturday
The Willmar Mustangs, a semi-pro football team in its second season, will play a team from the South Metro in a league game at 5 p.m. Saturday in Olivia.
The Mustangs lost last week, 28-8, to the league’s top team, Fargo-Moorhead.
Hutchinson’s Josh Goebel, Gene Doherty, Sam Plath and Chuck Hartman are on the roster.
The game, which will be played at BOLD High School, is part of the Corn Capital Days celebration.
HORSESHOES: Gene’s Hurlers took a commanding 10 1/2 point lead over The Clankers during week nine of the Hutchinson Horseshoe League Monday. The Hurlers won 14-6 over Brandon Tire, while fourth-place Ice House Gang upset The Clankers, 11 1/2-8 1/2. Gary Dietel and Daryl Gruenwaldt were the individual winners.
SOFTBALL: The 16U state qualifiers from the Crow River League are: first, Annandale; second, Dassel-Cokato (both advance to Class C in Stewartville 7/25-27); third, Delano; fourth, Howard Lake-Waverly; fifth, Maple Lake (all advance to Class D in Cloquet 8/1-3).
