Miss Hutchinson Kati Wendlandt gave up her crown to a surprised Jaclyn Auger during Sunday night’s coronation in the auditorium at Hutchinson High School. Judges also selected Auger, who played her guitar and sang a Kelly Clarkson tune, for the talent award. They presented the congeniality award to Danielle Penk. Stacy Backen was named princess. Even “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell would be impressed by the way Hutchinson High School student musicians performed in competition Friday. Band, choir and string musicians garnered 42 “superior” ratings and 14 “excellent” ratings at the Class 2AA Solo and Ensemble Contest at Dassel-Cokato High School. The 9th Annual Tim Orth Memorial Benefit was held in Glencoe Friday with money being raised to assist three families with medical expenses. The action on the court included the two basketball games as well as performances from such groups as the Hutch Dance Center and Showstoppers dance team. Sunday evening’s warm weather was perfect for enjoying the sights and sounds at the Gopher Campfire bird sanctuary in Hutchinson. Canadian and graylag geese fed on grain — and honked and hissed to maintain their pecking order. Little Emma Carlson showed up with her mom, Jenna, and Jeremy Melnychuk of Hutchinson. The Hutchinson Theatre Company’s spring production of “The Nerd,” by Larry Shue, staged as a dessert theater, will open at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 29.
