About a week ago, Sonja Muellerleile’s daughter, Alia, was watching coverage of the quake devastation in Haiti with her family. “She was asking what an earthquake was and wanted to see some pictures of what was going on,” Sonja said.
“She said, ‘Who’s going to help all those people?’” Sonja recalled. “She wanted to do something after seeing the pictures.”
“I heard that they had no water and food,” Alia said. “I wanted to help them.”
After getting permission from her school, Alia brought a penny collection jar to her West Elementary first-grade classroom. Braml’s class hasn’t tallied the amount of money they’ve collected yet, as the drive started just last Wednesday. “A lot of the children are giving their own money,” Braml said. “Many have brought it from their own piggy banks.”
